RPG Storylines

Post by Stupid »

What's your impression of some of the greatest RPG storylines ever? I'm hoping to get some lesser-known titles thrown on the table here. The biggest reason I play RPGs is for their story (which is why I don't care about cheating in an Emulator to get through the game faster).
My Top 10, in order:
1.) Xenosaga (omfg so awesome)
2.) Final Fantasy X (great every time I've played through it)
3.) Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrels (old SNES game)
4.) Chrono Cross (high replay value for storyline)
5.) Chrono Trigger (hard to beat 30 or so endings)
6.) Final Fantasy 8
7.) Final Fantasy 6
8.) Final Fantasy 4
9.) Final Fantasy 5 (from what I have seen)
10.) Final Fantasy 7 (here comes the whining "OMG, it's at the bottom of his list, he's an idiot") Hey, at least it's ON my list
Honorable Mention: Super Mario RPG ('twas a good game), Dragon Warrior 7 (intriguing), Kingdom Hearts (anticipating the sequel)
I'm trying to acquire a copy of Xenogears, and am currently playing Parasite Eve for the first time.
My biggest disappointments are: FFX-2, FF7, and FF9.

dude..

7 is awsome, THE best final fantasy yet in my opinion. 9 was also pretty sweet too...i dunno how that was a disappointment to you. 10 is great..i'm near the end as you know..X-2 loox pretty gay..i have but havent started it. i'm also in the middle of chrono trigger...great game so far. still gotta play the others..it's just hard to find the time to play RPGs these days.

Rocket Propelled Grenade meets Sheep.

(Peter Jackson's "Bad Taste" 1982)

That's gotta be the best story EVA! ;)

<---- Chrono Trigger! (and it only had 13 endings BTW)

Xenogears = awesome as well. Square has released it as a greatest hits so hit up your local VG Store.

Star Ocean 2 was really good too.

And, yes, 7 was my fave FF as well. Love them Materia Combos!

well if you count all the minor differences between several of the endings, you could technically say 16 endings for Chrono Trigger.

no, I'm talking about, if Lara has crippled legs or not. If the cat goes into the portal with your mom, or you simply look for Crono. If Epoch is destroyed or not. If Glenn is restored to his former form or not. Those types of things.

Planescape Torment. I've played about a half dozen RPGs, including the FF's, PT is by far the most interesting and creative.

Pick up a copy from the bargain bin...

JMEaT... Was that a recent Greatest Hits release, because I looked at SAM'S Club, Wal-Mart, Electronics Boutique, and a local used games store and couldn't find Xenogears anywhere. I see online that it's greatest hits now. Whoo Hoo. Just won it for $14+$5 shipping/handling, which is what I'd be paying for it here locally. This one is still "factory sealed", and appears to be coming from a gaming store in AZ. I've heard of the Star Ocean games, and I know SO3 is coming out some time soon. What platforms are #1 and #2 on?

Secret of Mana (SNES) was one of my faves.
Xenogears, FFX, Chrono Chross, FF7, .hack serries, FF9, Star Ocean 2, Parasite Eve 1 & 2, Breath of Fire III.

Never played 5 & 6, or the original Chrono trigger, so can't comment on em.

ACK!!!! I was just talking to a guy about RPGs yesterday, and for some crazy-odd-dementia-reason, I managed to omit Final Fantasy Tactics! It goes in my #4 spot, above Chrono Cross. BWAHHAHHA... that even displaces FF7 out of my Top 10!!! I'm anxiously awaiting/hoping that the .hack series will be released in all 4 titles sometime soon at a greatly reduced price (like $100 or something). Another honorable mention in the story category was "Lunar: Silver ?star? Story Complete" It was an original SNES game remade to work on the PS1, and it uses the technology of anime-drawn CGI with voice-overs (which is what I heard Xenogears used, too).

Xenogears had an awesome storyline. Kept me playing for the 48+ hours it took me to beat it.

Man oh man.... I just got my copy of XG in the mail today, and you guys are really making me drool about it. I'm only on Day 3 of Parasite Eve, so whenever I get a chance to play the PS2 I'll beat that then play XG. 8)
