does anyone really like FPS games anymore? i'm sick of em. I like how the germany name for them is EGO SHOOTER.

\"AHH YOU ARE IN MY SIGHTS I WILL KILL YOU, FOR KILLING IS WHAT I DO AND I WILL DO IT AND THE KILLING OF YOU IS WHAT I WILL BE DOING\", srsly.
i was prettymuch sick of them by Duke3D and Quake. The only reason after that was as a showboat for the graphics card industry.

roid,

then you don't know that a fps game can be more than just that. It only depends on the \"sub genre\". I really love tactical shooters like Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon and Battlefield. These games aren't just about running and gunning: Playing them thoughtfully pays, and they offer a great variety in actions and tactics.

GRAW has turned out to be a good game. Nice expansion on the Ghost Recon theme. Ai could use a little work.

Well, as long as we're calling Far Cry modern, Half-Life 2 was the best FPS I've ever played, bar none.

Definitely HL2. I can't wait until this comes out for the 360 with Portal.

I think HL2 looked good, but it limited the player far too much. Levels were small and extremely linear. Compared to HL1, imo it was a failure. I like Farcry much better, although it wasn't as good as the ad campaigns tried to make you believe it was.

For deathmatch or online play, nothing beats good old quake, but for single player I really am digging GRAW. Hell of a game. 20 bucks well spent.

I own GRAW, installed it months ago, haven't come around to even starting it, though I like the GR series very much. :/

The only FPS game I play is America's Army, (Becuase one of RIP's divisions is for AA.) Now, of you're talking non-ground pounder, then its obvious.

Are those my only choices? =P

heh Counter-Strike: Source deathmatch is a lot of fun. Flawed, but fun. =P

I actually have been playing Quake 4... haven't tried the multiplayer yet.

I like GRAW a lot too, haven't tried the second one yet.

Even though the game itself is quite linear, you'd be surprised at how different players approach the same problem. I watched as a friend went through part of HL2 and Episode 1 and he stumbled on solutions I never thought of. The levels are linear - but the way the battles and puzzles are crafted, there are many solutions.

Another recent FPS I liked was Prey. Aside from arguably having the best graphics of any of the Doom 3 engine games, it had a neat plot that didn't take itself too seriously. The parts with Art Bell on the radio were awesome.

Isn't it sad that you have to extinguish the entire command post at the checkpoint leading out of the zone just to get that stuff for the trader?

This thread is for Modern FPS games.

Quake III, HALF-LIFE and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are Sci-Fi... Not Modern.

Serious Sam 2. It was brainless fun. Interesting locales, mindless shooting over over a hundred enemies at a time. Just pure, mindless, fun.

heh... I said Quake 4... and they said Half-Life 2. Who cares if they're sci-fi? They're still cool.

The inclusion of Far Cry in the poll choices means otherwise.

"Modern FPS" isn't a really good criterion for a narrow selection, because modern is a pretty loose definition. It could refer to the setting in time of a game, or when the game was released.

This poll is flawed

The best Modern FPS is missing from that list

ArmA

some youtube action

not to mention full head tracking with TrackIR4 also

No one seems to have mentioned the 'Splinter Cell' series. I've played those over and over trying out different strategies. Endless mind games. I just got a new graphics card so that I can play the latest, 'Splinter Cell-Double Agent', which needs a pixel shader 3 capable graphics card to play.

One gripe is that I had to remove 'Chaos Theory'. It's copy protected by Starforce, which I purged from my system. What a bummer.

Far Cry was good, I can't wait for Crysis.

I says CS. But really, that's the only FPS game I have on that list. But I'll be getting Far Cry for Wii next time I'm going into town! Mostly for the multiplayer though.
