I've uploaded pics from my cruise (taken with Canon G3)
And the rest of the pics are taken with my new Canon Rebel XTi with the 18-55 USM lens and 70-300 IS USM lens.

Good captures of the squirl. I also like the 3rd dog pic.

How do you like your new lens, did you decide on a macro yet?

I love the new lens. Haven't decided on a macro yet. Wife is taking her mom on a cruise to the Caribbean in November so I won't be able to buy another lens for a while.

I'm not sure how to go about finding what I want when it comes to macro.

I've seen fixed ones, zoom ones, how do I know which to get?

Canon lenses are popular because of there quality but they are more expensive and they only make fixed macros.

Fixed (prime) lenses are usually better in terms of quality, lower distortion and other defects and have bigger apertures (for lower light conditions) and are smaller and lighter.

Zoom lenses of course have the benefits of increasing/decreasing the size of the subject in the composition without having to move but the quality of the lenses aren't as high as a fixed lens. You can't have perfect quality throughout the entire zoom range so some times the max focal length quality is very sharp and the min focal length is blurry. It depends on the lens so you need to read reviews because there are many things to look for that effect the quality of the pictures you take.

You also have to decide on focal length. If your taking pics of insects and flowers they don't move as much so taking photos from far away isn't as important but the focal length can change the 'feel' of the photo. I choose the 100mm macro cuzz it gave me some space between the camera and the subject but still didn't look compressed. I looked at the 180mm macro and the photos of insects looked compressed imo.

Hope that wasn't confusing.

That made perfect sense to me. I was actually looking at the 100mm one. It's $800 which is the same price as the Zoom I just bought. The 180mm is $1700 here.

Thanks for the info.

Some of the moon pics (newest ones) were actually taken without a tripod. I love the Image Stabilizer on this lens.
