For the freeware option, google VirtualDub.

I like a video editing progrma to let me mess with audio as well, anybody got freeware for that too? That's not to say that Virtual Dub is a POS, I haven't actually tried to do anything with it yet....

If you have Linux, there's Cinelerra. It works with both audio and video, although I haven't personally used it, so I can't review it.

I'm new at video editing, but just finished compiling a DVD of my sons wedding :D using a combination of Nero and Windows Movie Maker.

It came out pretty decent, nice menus, several different chapters and videos, along with a number of slide shows.

I was able to combine and edit pretty well using the combination of the two.
