Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, autopatcher actually HELPED and PROMOTED M$ by making the fixes easier to obtain and apply.

Its almost like MS doesn't want to have a positive image. Its like they have a public relations department whose objective is to make them look bad instead of good, like when they sued that 17-year old a few years back because they thought people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Microsoft and Mike Rowe Soft.

I am continually astounded, and I am continually compelled to put up with some of the sh!tness of Linux and move all of my Windows games to that OS under Wine, just so I can say I have nothing to do with Micro$uck.

Thanks Krom!

And Top, be forewarned. Wine doesn't run all windows games. hehe.. ironically, it runs windows programs only a little better than Vista does. ...but for different reasons I imagine. There are others here that can answer that better than I.
It's kinda a craps shoot as to what will run. Hit the forums before you make that leap and see what runs well or at all under Wine.

MS probably should consider facilitating something like that themselves if they're that worried about third-party involvement with the patching process.

with their "Genuine MS Assurance" program that reloads everytime you update from their site, it's little wonder they're so persnickety. I'm sure they'll be the same way even after they discontinue supporting update downloads.

And Strife.. yes it will, but I think I remember reading somewhere that it involves alchemy.

I thought WGA only applied to some updates?

Edit: Besides which, WGA could be implemented as a check before installation, instead of being necessary for the download - it isn't like it's impossible to get the files through other means anyway.

Nope... anytime you do a fresh install and then goto the MS site for updates. It will install the WGA first before you can update.
Because of this, WinXP needs to be activated so that the WGA checks to make sure you have a genuine copy, before updates.

With AutoPatcher, you could get around this if you didn't have a genuine copy.

So, it's no surprise they finally got told to take it down.

I don't use the WGA, There's an alternate version that downloads a standard exe and does some checks locally, and gives you a code you can copy/paste into WU. Check at the bottom of any page that said Authentication Required.

If it is, they do a damn good job of hiding it. I love how after Windows decides to download an update, you can't cancel that specific update's installation. *miffed*
