Wireless security on Toshiba Satellite A55-S326

I set up WEP on my friend's Belkin F5D7230-4 router but password is greyed out on laptop on the Lan settings.

Although I see the network in Wireless Networks, do I need to \"Add\" instead of going to the Properties which is where the password is greyed out?

double click the network from the laptop and enter in the password that was setup on the router. It should then remember it for next time and automatically connect to it.

Password area greyed out.

If the password is greyed out on the laptop, then it may be already added before. Are you able to connect to the network wirelessly?

If not, go into the advanced options and remove the network and try to reconnect to it.

Are you in with an account that is restricted? You may need to use run as with the administrator password to make modifications.

It was connecting before I \"secured\" the router for the first time.

They have to other laptops, a Toshiba and a Sony and I was just able to \"Connect\" and add the password when requested.

For the restricted part, the \"Run\" function wasn't working but the fellow I'm working with, over the net, not hands on, clicked on something and the run function worked.

The WEP password area acted like the \"Run\" did originally. Large flashing cursor and window grayed out.

I'll see if I can figure out who's the Admin and password.

Now that they can't get on the net, I can't see the computer. Using LogMeIn.

Update the wireless drivers and whatever program is being used to access wireless.

Make sure you also have \"This key is provided to me automatically\" unchecked.

If all else fails, go into the perfered networks tab and nuke the connection and then recreate it.

As an aside, WEP is known to be insecure these days. It'll keep out casual surfers, but anyone determined to get into your network will do so. Consider WPA or WPA2 as an alternative if you're interested in securing your network.

well....today I checked the \"users\" and there was only one. I ck'd SP2 was on and updated.

So, opened the wireless connections, clicked on the network and clicked on \"Connect\" and it let me put in a password and all is well.

Can't figure it out but thanks to all for their posts. I got a lot of good info for the next time this comes up.
