Shut down Windows Updates?

I'm working on a machine running very slow and I noticed that Windows is downloading updates. It has moved 2 % in the last half hour and it's at 43% now.

Can I go into Processes in the Taskmgr and delete the update mgr and restart and see if I can get a faster download or should I leave it alone?

Turn off Auto updates, then do them manually.

I was actually talking about an update in process. But it seemed to work when I went to the M$ update site and worked from there.

If you see the process \"wuauclt.exe\" end it. That is the main component of Windows Update. (It will also utilize an instance of SvcHost)

Set it up like in that screenshot and they won't auto-download.

Ace: Several windows services use svchost.exe, not just BITS.

If you want to kill B.I.T.S. do not go killing svchost.exe as doing so will probably bluescreen or hardlock your OS in short order.

Kill it by stopping \"Background Intelligent Transfer Service\" in services.msc (Start ---> Run ---> \"services.msc\").

Also of note:

If you disable BITS the windows update website will ask to re-enable it to work.

Just turn off Automatic Windows Update, at least with XP, and go there manually on every second Tuesday of the month (after 12:00 PM PST in the U.S.) and just select 'custom install' and then 'critical updates', not any of the hardware or software ones unless you see what they are first. Watch out for the driver updates from them.

One of their hardware updates really trashed my sound card drivers, so check first. Then the updater won't be trying to run at an inopportune time. If Vista won't let you turn off Automatic Updates, well, just another reason to hate Vista
