Another Question or two

Post by Interceptor6 »

A day or so ago, I had noticed that Interplay had a patch file on their website that would fix the problem the dual Jewel d3 had upon patching ( 'old file not found', etc ) Which is the exact same problem i've had when trying to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.4. I don't have the dual jewel version though, but its the same message I get. However, when i try to patch with 1.4 after running Djfix, it still returned the same message (figures), and I still can't patch D3. The inability to return to the main menu after playing a level with mods is becoming pretty annoying. Has anyone else heard of this problem? Someone mentioned here in the past that I could have the Austrailian version of D3 by some fluke, but that isn't the prob either, I tired the austrailian patch but still no luck. And besides, I didn't have the Austrailian box either, so that's pretty much ruled out.

Also, does anyone know how to disable a startup program in Windows 2000? The time required for startup is ridiculous on this thing due to the crazy ammount of prgs loaded on startup, and I was looking for an easy way to shorten it by keeping them from starting up on windows start. I heard that you could do it in the Msconfig dialog, but it doesn't exist in Win2k. So is there a way to edit the startup program list without directly editing the registry? I'm guessing there are a few programs out there that could do it, but I wouldn't know which to download.

...Any ideas?

Directly editing the reg is the best way to stop stuff from loading when you dont have msconfig;
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

Also a good way to kill programs that are loading is to go into their settings and disable any loading with windows. Some programs will start themselves as a service and wouldnt show up in that location on the registry (but you could stop them in services.msc). I also tend to uninstall and completely remove any programs that stuff the system full of unneeded tray icons, odds are there is a better program to do the job with less BS involved.

Regarding your first problem, are you trying the US version of the patch? Many people have received that same error message because many copies of D3 sold in the US were actually the Australian version. I'm not even sure why there are separate versions, as they don't seem to differ in anything but patching :P. Try the Australian 1.4 patch and see if that solves your problem; it worked for me. The dual jewel patch only works with the dual jewel version, regardless of the error message.

I didn't really expect it to work since it was for the dual jewel, was only trying that as a last ditch effort. I had tried both the US and Austrailian 1.4 patches, but it still returns the same message. So i'm pretty much screwed. :p

May end up having to get the dual jewel to fix it while i can still find it. It's less than 10 bucks now, so that would certainly work.

Anyway, I'll try out that program to edit the startup. thanks.

I haven't tred anything so far besides the US and Austrailian patches. I guess I may as well give them a try, but I don't expect anything to work though. :p

Ace What happened!! you did good for a month or two, guess it went against your nature! oh well!

---Back on Topic---

Inteceptor : most people have the US boxed set (with paper holder) and Merc Add-On they bought seperately. Now when they do a fresh install... D3 box is 1.0, then to 1.3 with merc, then they use US vers 1.4 patch.

If you have D3 and no merc add on pack download all the patches and install them incrementally. 1.3 has support for Black Pyro but not the actual Model.

nope, never had it in the D3 Dir. Never thought it would make any difference. :p

I downloaded the 1.2 and 1.3 patches as well, i'll try them from the desktop and D3 dir to see what happens.
