setting up a basic FTP Server with XP sp2

im wanting to setup a server on my third box, its a new Prescott 3.0GHz HT w/2GB of DDR400.

whats the easiest way to start a FTP Server on WinXP SP2 and a 6MBit DSL Connection

im also looking for simple tweaks such as making a HTTP Link to it.

Well you could use IIS for it (ugh) but you would be better off grabbing some freeware FTP server program, they should be easier to work with.

Additionally the syntax to link to a FTP folder or file is ftp://username:password@URL

If you set up anonymous access (I STRONGLY recommend against doing that) you can forgo the username:password part.

yeah ive already done the IIS Part, and this is kinda confusing..... could you recommend a good freeware FTP?

Another vote for filezilla server.

If youre using this for only personal stuff I would recommend running a vpn server and routing the ftp through vpn.

If its for public use I would use the SSL/certificate/encryption option in the server.

uuuuugh, okay i got the directory setup that i want to use, but i cant connect to it from my other machine?!?!

is there anything im missing here? ive got my account setup, and all the settings setup. i do have a router, but its not using any NAT or firewalls

All you have to do is forward the port you're using to that machine. The only way you can test it on your end is to connect to the LOCAL IP from your machine. That won't test if the port is forwarded, just if the server is functional and if the security you setup is working.
