UT3 + Collectors Edition + UnrealEd4 + 3dsmax = YAY!

Post by Dakatsu »

Got UT3 on Tuesday, and after beating the campaign, started looking at the tutorials. Firstly I must say the game still runs great, practically the same as the demo. I rarely got any lag on maximum settings on a 2.4Ghz Dual Core, 2GB RAM, and an Nvidia 7900 (Averaged 20fps, not bad really!)

Now, I have successfully put into the game a model!

Although all I currently did was add the emissive map, I think that this is great, this means that I can create models for UT3, and progress on a mod!

I am so bleeping happy :)

Doesn't UT3 ship with Maya PLE included?

I am not sure, but I just like 3ds max, and I have gotten more objects into the game as tests, soon I will try to texture and create some scenery!

Conflict: Aki FTW!

Hmmm... I've been thinking about getting this game. However, I'm not really into just buying UT3 to play it. I'm more into modding it. But I also don't have $5000 to spare, nor will I have that for some time from now. From what I have currently read, UT3 isn't supported by Maya PLE this time. Probably because Discreet bought it out. So to me, it isn't really worth it since the amount of mod designers and model designers will decrease significantly for it. So, the lifespan may decrease as well.

Actually, of what I've read, although Maya PLE may not of came with it, I haven't needed to use any plugins for 3dsmax to get models into unreal (except for animations and such I got ActorX). So far in terms of models, there is no need of any extra plug-ins. You could probaly use the Maya ActorX plug-in infact. It looks as if everything is done by normal maps (since I don't use Maya, I have no idea if there is support for that) and the materials (the purple is actually just a numerical value for red and green under the emissive map for that section of the grenade, so I don't see so far anything different.

Then again, I never modelled for UT2004, only tried to map and gave up when BSP faces really boned me with a gallon of BSP HOLES!!!!

Accept that there is another problem. From what I have read, the Actor X plugin doesn't support animations nor any rigging. So, the only meshes you will be able to create.... will be static meshes. So, no new characters, weapons, or vehicles can be created for the game without something like 3DS Max, which costs a good $5000 for the average modder. Don't think you'll find many that will fork out the cash. UT3 looks very much like a fancy-pants dumbed down UT2004. I hear that there are only 6 CTF maps and they didn't even include half of the classics and the only maps they did keep are UT2004 rehashes for the most part. Not to mention, they raped the Hellbender and a few other vehicles. Eye candy looks good though.

But without Maya support, I'm not touching it until it comes out on the 360. And only then if my friends also want to play it.

Actually on the contrary, that is all the ActorX plug-in seems to do:

To create static meshes you export the model as an ASE file.
