How to obtain a domain name?

How would I go about obtaining a domain name if I already have a website host?

I want to register at www.godaddy.com but I'm not sure if I should do forwarding with or without masking or use a nameserver.

I'm not sure what a nameserver is or if I need one. I don't want the domain name just to point and redirect to an IP address.

Any ideas?

A name server is a dedicated machine that tells anyone on the internet who accesses your domain what IP addres they should use. Usually, your webhost will provide one if it is a paying service (if you're at geoshitties or the like, don't bother).
