An Indian woman and her newborn died Wednesday from a lack of medical treatment because she is considered an \"untouchable\" in her country, officials said.
Maya Devi, 28, gave birth outside of the maternity wing of Kanpur Medical College in northern Uttar Pradesh state. The baby boy died within minutes of his birth.
Devi was placed in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital because she had a heart attack, but she died Thursday morning.
Several doctors, including the hospital's chief medical superintendent, had refused to touch her or provide medical care as she delivered her baby, the Press Trust of India reported.
Devi was a Dalit, or \"untouchable,\" a group at the bottom of the caste social ladder who have long been ostracized and forced into menial professions despite laws banning discrimination.
Many high-class Hindus fear coming into contact with them.
Dr. Kiran Pandey, head of gynecology at the hospital, said she was an hour's drive away in the state capital Lucknow at the time and rushed back.
\"We provided her the best medicines and treatment, but she succumbed to two cardiac arrests,\" Pandey said.
College principal Anand Swaroop has ordered an inquiry, as has a district magistrate.
The state's chief minister, Mayawati, who won elections last year, has ordered the doctors to be suspended and demanded an investigation.

TB, are you denouncing the social \"caste\" system? If so, then I completely agree with you. It's completely screwed-up for a culture to marginalize a segment of its own population like that.
However, your thread title is something about religion. You need to give us some idea of what you're thinking, not just an article.

In India, two people died as a result of doctors refusing to treat the patient. It shows people in well-off countries the suffering caused by brute elitism, and many people feel they are doing their part to humanity by spreading this news, in the hope that it will inspire others to prevent such elitism.
In the same India, approximately 198 million were malnourished in 2001-2003 (Wikipedia). This is being largely ignored in the Western world, and very few news reports have been made on this matter. Moreso, few developed countries have been donating as much as their promised quota to the FAO, especially USA and Greece, who are woefully behind on donations.
Now, which one of those two do you think is more important, eh?

whether the caste system in India is originally based on religion seems to be a matter of some debate.

The whole premise of the caste system is rooted in India's belief of reincarnation. You are reincarnated into a higher/lower caste based on...something. Your Karma, or whatever goofy crap they believe in. I think India is worse than the Arab states for over-the-top, incredibly stupid followings of religion. I thought they were less ridiculous, but the more I read the news, the more I'm convinced that they have surpassed the Arabs. Or at least neck-and-neck.

I kinda agree on the stupid crap, except while I think Hinduism has more stupid crap, Islam has more terroristic crap.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/04/28/pra ... index.htmlWESTON, Wisconsin (AP) -- Two parents who prayed as their 11-year-old daughter died of untreated diabetes were charged Monday with second-degree reckless homicide.

D.A. Jill Falstad announces charges against parents who didn't seek medical attention for a diabetic child.
Family and friends had urged Dale and Leilani Neumann to get help for their daughter, but the father considered the illness \"a test of faith\" and the mother never considered taking the girl to the doctor because she thought her daughter was under a \"spiritual attack,\" the criminal complaint said.
\"It is very surprising, shocking that she wasn't allowed medical intervention,\" Marathon County District Attorney Jill Falstad said. \"Her death could have been prevented.\"
Madeline Neumann died March 23 -- Easter Sunday -- at her family's rural Weston home. Her parents were told the body would be taken to Madison for an autopsy the next day.
\"They responded, 'You won't need to do that. She will be alive by then,\"' the medical examiner wrote in a report.
An autopsy determined that Madeline died from undiagnosed diabetic ketoacidosis, which left her with too little insulin in her body. Court records said she likely had some symptoms of the disease for months.

Wow, on Easter Sunday. What a slap in the face of the parents. Putting aside the death of a child for a second, that's hilarious.
Also, if it was undiagnosed, then no one knew what her problem was...how can they charge the parents with anything? Doesn't seem right. Sure they are disgustingly stupid people, but I don't see where a crime has been committed.
