Islamic Saudi Academy
Islamic Textbook Teaches It’s OK to Kill
By Online Saturday, June 14, 2008

CBNNews.com - A federal investigation released Wednesday reveals that some Islamic textbooks are teaching kids it’s okay to kill adulterers and converts from Islam.

The books have been used by the Islamic Saudi Academy, which teaches 900 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in Alexandria and Fairfax. The school receives much of its funding from the Saudi government.

Passages in their textbooks state that “the Jews conspired against Islam and its people” and that Muslims are permitted to take the lives and property of those deemed “polytheists.”

The academy has come under scrutiny from critics who allege that it is teaching an intolerant brand of Islam.

Last year, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, a panel formed by Congress, recommended the school be shut down out of concern it promoted violence.

“We feel more confident that the potential problems we flagged before really are there,” said the commission’s spokeswoman, Judith Ingram, after the content of textbooks were reviewed

In the review, the panel recommended that the school make all of its textbooks available to the State Department so changes can be made before the next school year.

I think ferno is refering more along the lines of, \"if your going to post an article, tell us what you think.\"

Even in this small community, if everyone did what TB does... you could never find a real thread.

Not at all.

He's just as tired as I am of ThunderBunny's cut & pasted article quotes. They don't tell us anything we don't already know (yep, we know there are some whacko-super-violent branches of Islam which want to kill all Westerners, treat women as less than human, and are trying to spread their hateful message)... the problem is that those sources sensationalize it to the point where the intent is just to create fear and hatred. My problem with it is that those articles hold some truth, but they're skewed in the sense that they paint a broad-brush picture of every single person who identifies themselves as Muslim.

(Of course, TB would respond that the violent whackos are the only "true" followers of Islam. But when people refer to "Muslims", that doesn't only include the crazies... the decent folk are included in that term.)

Go back through the DBB E&C history, and TB's last 100 or so posts. You'll see the pattern.

-----------------

P.S. I know ThunderBunny personally. I've met him, been to his place of business. He's a good guy. He's had some pretty bad experiences with religion, and in my opinion has just gotten himself lost reading all the sensationalist sources he quotes.

Tiger, you can quit the \"drive-bys\" now. They add absolutely nothing to the discussion.

Maybe it's just like the embryo illustrations in the popular Evolution text-books, and they just haven't gotten around to removing it yet. ;)

That's a good point... and I used it against TB last time, when I told him to at least include a personal opinion whenever he added a pasted quote. I don't want him to stop posting his opinions of the Muslim world.

@ Foil, one has to wonder what causes good people to act that way toward Muslims in general. If you claim that TB is a good person then he must have had a good reason, and if he is a good person then his reason is good enough for me.

Did you seriously try and pigenhole me? ROFL.

I'm just sick and tired of looking at a TB thread and seeing the same crap over and over again. Either post some original thought or the link.. or do us all a favor TB and SHUT THE HELL UP.

It just alarms me that there's an actual religion- a set of philosophical rules- that a large portion of the world's population assumes is divine in origin- that teaches CHILDREN that it's ok to kill people. Normally you would think it would be confined to a small wacko cult, but this is an established religion.

Umm... no, no it doesn't. If you read the article again, you'll notice that only 900 students were learning from these books. That's not what I call a large portion.

900 perhaps but the fact that they were learning here in America is what is troubling.

Oooh, I missed that part! But still, it's not right to judge an entire religion just because of this.

It's not just 900 students, Tiger. TB is right that it's far, far more than just a tiny sect teaching this. As I recall, one of the largest Islamic groups (I don't remember the name) interprets their Qu'ran as supporting those teachings.

My problem with it is with the blanket use of the term \"Islam\", which implies that all or almost all Muslims are this way.

Foil, I think the sect you are referring to is \"Wasabi\". While the vast majority of muslims do not follow these \"Kill the infidel\" teachings, there are enough that do which with over a billion floating around the world, even 1% makes for a pretty hefty army.

\"Wahabi\" is the term you're looking for. \"Wasabi\" is some kind of food. :P

Yes, that was my problem too. Realistically, it'd be better to simply call them madmen or something similar, and leave it at that, rather than trying to tie it in with a rarely-followed part of a major religion.

WTF, "rarely followed"?!?! You can't be that naive. There is hardly a Muslim school outside the U.S. that doesn't include the lessons that Jews are subhuman and infidels don't have any rights!! Now go look up how many Muslim children are in the world and tell me if that would qualify as "rarely followed"?!?!
Just because they don't all strap on the suicide bomb by age thirteen doesn't mean those lessons didn't have an impact and breed an attitude that makes them easy targets for fundamentalist recruiters later on!

I bet if a few Christians wanted to say grace out loud before lunch in a school cafeteria you'd have a fricken mouthful to say then though wouldn't you!?!

Got any particular proof? Because I don't believe that even for a second.

Only incredibly arrogant people would care over things like that. Heck, all three schools I was in were primarily Catholic schools with their fair share of atheists, Jews and Muslims, but nobody ever had the slightest objection to even being there during religion class!

Will is right, Tiger. That kind of teaching isn't ubiquitous, but it's far from \"rarely-followed\", either. It's prevalent in some very large Islamic groups.

I share your desire to resist blanket broad-brush statements like \"This is what Islam teaches\"... but you have to resist the urge to respond to over-statements by under-stating them.

FYI Wahhabi is the Major player in the Sunni sect of Islam, the Sunni sect is the largest of the 3 main Muslim sects. Hardly \"rarely-followed\"

Sure, read the Koran then find out if most Muslim schools teach the Koran, and to what degree, as a part of their curriculum.
Do that and you'll know I'm not lying.
