would it be a good idea to dual boot vista/xp

If you do use Vista, make the leap and get a 64 bit version (compatibility shouldn't be a major issue anymore).
AFAIK dual booting Vista requires either a separate partition, or a separate hard drive. It is not possible to install Vista and XP on the same drive letter (Vista would overwrite and replace XP).
