looks at posts above....blind leading the blind when it comes a non boot issue (there isn't any CS settings on laptop parts)

take respective windows XP install disk

XP home Retail
XP Home OEM
XP Pro Retail
XP Pro OEM
XP Pro Corp

boot to cd like your going to install XP again

hit enter wait for install setup to detect Previous version of Windows(if not detected your have wrong install disc), when detected you will see a 3rd option for repair windows install, choose that one instead of fresh install


Try to use a Version of the above disc with the Same Service PACK

sounds like your friend did not insert the keyboard ribbon cable all the way, or pulled it out slightly during reassembly (not uncommon)

BTW I Repair at least 5 laptops a week and 3-4 Vista to XP Upgrades for business's and at least 1 macbook/ibook/air every 3 weeks

Using a disk with the same service pack slipstreamed on it is fine, however it is also safe and acceptable to repair install from a disk with a higher service pack. Meaning if you have SP2 installed, it is fine to repair from a SP3 disk since it will automagically update the system to SP3.

However it is NOT a good idea to repair install from a disk with a lesser service pack on it. For instance repairing a SP2 installation from a SP1 disk could cause problems.

When you turn it on the lights flash and then it shuts down in about 3 seconds.

I imagine imagine there's a short somewhere from installing the new keyboard.

The owner didn't/doesn't now anything about the inner workings of a laptop.

Think we're done at this point.

Not Quite... but you can try that in a business environment and see how little success you have with it after you get to reinstall XP and patch it back to SPK2 and the reinstall the clients applications and data....

Canuck stop working on legacy equipment and attempt to think it is relevant for today's laptops

Wolfe - reconnect the keyboard stop at step 9, same url that was in my previous post you failed to read

P.S. This is legacy hardware and these drives do have jumpers... brainiac.

Um hello, if a hard drive with 4 pins does not have a jumper on it when you pulled it out of a laptop, what compels you to slap one on the make it work before you stick it back in??

Master is a no jumper configuration............braniac!

I've solved boot issues more than once by using CS even in units with master only drives, its worth a shot to try. And I have lots of extra jumpers so I like putting them on the pins... its a fetish I have. Sometimes I'll even put two on.
