I wanted to install D3 on my XP machine, but the Setup.exe (and the Descent3AutoRun.exe) won't run from the CD (nor will they run if I copy the files to my hard disk.) Is there a solution to this?

For your sake I hope there is. I just copied over the installation I had with WinMe (yes, I actually had that \"OS\").

I don't know but I suspect, your CDROM is defect ... tive.
Or quite likely not working right. Is the disc clean?

It's not the DVD drive. It runs everything else fine. As I said, I copied the files from the CD to the hard disk and I still get the same behavior.

Try running it in 98 SE compatibility mode.

Apparently restarting your system will fix this error. ROFL. *sigh*
