routers and a netopia 3364 DSL Modem

okay, trying to re-wire the network at my job. we have x2 8 port LinkSys Routers that we need to wire into a netopia 3364 DSL Modem w/ 4 port switch.

i have one router already working, but 2 ports are not responding to data traffic. the 2nd router is configured but no data traffic.


what i need to know is that if the DSL Modem is in the Bridging mode, do all of the 4 LAN ports work or does only port 1 work? ATT doesnt know the answer to this question. <-- scoff


can routers be wired in series? instead of parallel by using port 8 of router 1 and plugging it into the Internet port of Router 2?

im definitely not a network genius and i only have a basic understanding of how these things work.

I don't know much too much about routers either, but here's a few things to check/try:

1. Make sure you are connecting the routers to the DSL using their jack labeled \"Internet\", otherwise they may function as an ethernet switch instead of a router.

2. If that isn't the problem, they can be wired in series.

3. You can also go into the DSL modem's settings and make sure that all ethernet ports are enabled.

4. Read the owners manual- if the one in the box isn't in depth enough, google the make and model of your DSL modem to find one.

Routers can be connected to other routers through WAN ports with no problems, but trying to make a big LAN powered from a string of routers is a different story. Also your DSL/Cable modem if it is a 4 port must be in router mode not bridge mode for any of this to work. Bridge mode for modems means all router functions including its internal LAN and DHCP are disabled, all traffic that comes in from the internet gets passed to just one port on the back, the other ports become dead.

You can try switching the other routers to bridge mode and the LAN might still work even through the WAN ports on the bridged routers. Otherwise change the internal LAN IPs to all the other routers to something within the same range/subnet and connect ports from the switches to the central router and the whole thing should form up into a LAN.

Of course the best option IMO is to ditch the whole mess, keep the DSL modem in router mode and plug in a 16+ port switch which should be relatively cheap and much less effort.

well i got 1 router fully up... router 2 is showing a active connection to the DSL Modem while its plugged into Port 2 and transceiving data, but i cant access the internet from any of the pc's on router 2, only talk to the router itself. router 1 is set as 192.168.1.1 and router 2 is likewise ending in .2


router 1 is setup in PPPoE with the DSL credentials, my problem is can i have Router 2 do the same thing or do i need to daisy-chain the routers? what im getting at is, if router 1 is already logged in with the DSL credentials, can router 2 log in with the same credentials at the same time?

Don't use the wan port on the second router, just use the switch component and turn off DHCP on one of the routers.

it might be easier to replace the bad router with a switch.

So here is what you have, you have DSL modem with a 4 port router embedded in it (however it is disabled and set to bridge mode). Then you have two 8 port linksys routers you wish to connect to it correct?

Do you want two LANs with independent access to the internet, or do you just want a single LAN?

we are looking for just one large LAN, using the single DSL modem with upto 16 ports.


i know 16 port switches/routers exist, but we dont have the funds to purchase a true 16 port router.


so far this is what we are stuck with.... 2x 8 port routers and a single DSL Modem.

Then change the IP's on linksys routers to something you'd never use(like 249 and 248), disable DHCP on them. Then plug them into the DSL modem using a port on swtiches of the linksys routers.

turn off bridging mode on the DSL router/modem.

It be saner if you just replaced those linksys routers with switches.

Correct, 2-4 are disabled in bridging mode.

Or you can sell/dispose of the two linksys routers, set the DSL modem to router mode, and connect one of these to it:

(You can probably find similar models for even cheaper elsewhere, except for the Rosewill which is Newegg exclusive).

The DSL modem is already a router, so you do not need any additional routers, and 100 mbit switches are dirt cheap (so cheap that someone just up and GAVE me a 16 port 10/100 switch several years ago)...

problem with that bubba is that its not my money im spending on this equipment. even though im considering doing just that




sadly one router has failed, its flashing the power light 5 times then goes off, 5 times then off repeatedly.

went and bought a SD216 <-- i think thats the model #

16 Port switch. dumped the remaining BEFSR81 ( going to use it elsewhere) and got everything up and running just fine.
