Been noticing recently that my current mouse is starting to have problems. Just wondering what the current is on a good gaming mouse right now?

Very satisfied with my Logitech G7 for gaming. Although I use a MX Revolution for everything else.

Totally different ergonomics. For me the G9 is the best mouse I ever used, fits perfect. The G7 is just another typical LT mouse. And once you use that new scroll wheel, you never go back

(I do use the Revolution at work BTW.)

Razer totally missed the boat by becomming a marketing company, they are sort of the Bose of HID. Measured by todays standards their stuff is mediocre at best. And in the cases where they get the hardware right their software sux (take a look at the n52te eg.)

ahhh ok. I was thinking the G5 and G7. Both models went to a single thumb button. I prefer two and the G9 was out of my range then. Thanks for taking the trouble! Hey, is there much difference between the 2 grips? and how handy is the profile button? I also saw another button but didn't see anything on it.

Yes, they are very distinctive. Having small hands and prefering to move the mouse w/ my fingers (not w/ my wrist or arm) I use the small one.

Not very, being on the underside of the mouse

The G9 software can do automatic application based profile switching, the button is for situations were you can't install the software but still want a bit of flexibility.

2nd button on the belly ? It's for en-/disabling the fly-wheel mode of the scroll wheel. I never switch that tho, so it's not a problem IMHO.

hehe, I too have been ruined by the \"free\" scroll mode of the MX Revolution, I pretty much never use notched mode anymore except for a couple specific applications that flip pages I'm reading with one scroll click.

One thing that is a must with recent logitech mice though is to install uberOptions along with the SetPoint software, which lets you assign virtually any function to virtually any button instead of the rather restrictive and limited options that logitech allows by default. You can get uberOptions here: http://www.mstar.net/users/rlowens/
And it isn't anything major, it only replaces some of the XML settings files for SetPoint in documents and settings, it does not modify the actual application/dll files or drivers.

Thanks Krom. I've been a \"hardware and bare drivers only\" kinda guy until I got this Mx518 and my MS Keyboard. The software for both have been solid and not flaky as in the past (distant past I might add) and has allowed me to map buttons for things I would have not normally been able to do.

just uninstalled uber. it fubard a couple of games. wouldn't let a thumb button work. Don't need it anyways.

didn't know there was such a thing. Bought mine at a store over a years ago. The choices were limited.

Thanks Bubba. I did glance over a review that was basically labeled it another Mx518. The laser is more accurate on the G5 than it is on the Mx518.

lol Bubba, I came to the conclusion a long time ago that I generally suck at games. I enjoy them, but I don't try to be top dog. I can't for various non-hardware reasons.

So having a mouse that might be more accurate from barely to indiscernible, will not help my game. Thus I gave up caring about twitch factor and settled for comfort.

The G5 is only a marginal bump over the 518,

The G7 is exactly the same with a slower report rate (500 reports per sec vs 1000 reports per sec of the G5)

The G9 almost doubles the resolution from 2000 to 3800 dpi and goes a bit lower to 200 from 400. It goes back up to 1000 reports per sec.

but all three have the same acceleration max, the same Max speed (45-65 inch per sec) and the same image processing (6.4 megapixels)

and I'm pretty sure that all current mice, \"optical\" or \"laser\" operate on some kind of laser. It would seem that receiving camera is the factor and cpu on board.

lol .. the MX Revolution at equal price of the G9 gives NO specs except how cool the web features are!

(gotta love marketing)

anyways. that my bit of 20 minutes worth of reading and posting \"research\".

But really, when it boils down to it for me, refer to my reasons earlier.

I do hate logitech, that's why I said 'if you have to get a logitech mouse...' obviously. You have no idea what I've owned or used because you don't even know me. You haven't even seen me, yet for some reason you think you know everything about me and are better than I am. And since you don't read articles on PC hardware, that must mean you are a (rich) noob who buys stuff and doesn't do any research. I've got a month to return this G9, so I'll try it out and if it's awesome, I'll return it and order one of the G9x's from amazon.

I'm slowly moving my pc up from the darkages. First digital monitors, now a laser mouse!

Fits just right in my palm with the smaller shell, the precision is way better than the Habu I had, and the free wheel is awesome.

Seems like the only difference between the G9 and the G9x is the higher resolution...but I cant imagine using more than 2000 (and the G9 goes to 3200)...I think I've got it set at 1200 atm, which is just this side of squirrely. I have 2 monitors at 1280 x 1024 (19\"), but I guess if I had 3 monitors and they were much larger, a higher speed might be needed.

Just curious, what dpi does everyone run their mice at?

I have 3 settings for my G7: 2000, 1200 and 400. I mostly use 2000 and 1200 for gaming, 400 I rarely use but is handy when I require very slow precise mouse control. The difference between 2000 and 1200 isn't something I really notice since both of them are very quick. But lets say in Left 4 Dead for example, I'd use 2000 with the shotguns and 1200 with the rifles.

But I can just as easily use 2000 for everything (and I often do). Honestly the on the fly DPI adjustments are mostly a marketing gimmick and not really *that* useful. Just setting the mouse to 2000 DPI and then adjusting the in-game sensitivity to your preference will get you the best results.

Just within Windows I use 1200 DPI because 2000 is too touchy and 400 is way too slow. Although I only use the G7 in Windows when the MX Revolution is charging (MX Revolution is hard coded to 800 DPI).

I discovered that after I installed setpoint, when I shutdown by putting my machine in standby mode, the case fans and cpu cooler wont turn off. The entire system shuts down except for these.

I had to do a system restore (uninstalling setpoint wont do it) to get it to go into standby properly. Wierd.

Not having setpoint installed messes with the mouse resolutions (even though I set them in the 3 mouse memory profiles) before doing the system restore.

I googled this and found that some versions of setpoint cause hibernation problems...this version of setpoint has no updates (latest version is 5.10.203, which I dl'ed from their site). Anyone else have this problem or a solution?

--edit--found a post on the logitech forums with this fix: (posting in case someone has this issue in the future)

Here is how you fix this (I'm using XP):
Click Start-Settings-Control Panel and open the Mouse applet. Select the Hardware tab and then click on the Properties button at the bottom. Select the Power Management tab and the uncheck the \"Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby\" option. Click on Apply and the change is implemented.

Now that that's fixed, back to dpi settings. 1200 seems to be the setting of choice (1000 is good, and 1400 isnt bad either). And I set the refresh to 1000 even tho it takes more cpu power (since the upgrade to the i7, I figure cpu power should be fine).

Yup, I'll X2 that and bold it. .. well no, but I agree. I've found that relying on the logitech software is asking for all sorts of unexpected problems in game.

My desktop is set on something like ultra-twitch.
