Progression of governments

Post by VonVulcan »

A history lesson.

Listen to this and note how our government has progressed over the years.

Not a pretty picture. You may dispute the conclusion, but the direction we are heading is clear.

By the time you figure it out, it is already too late to to do anything about it.

The video while interesting, is also foolishly optimistic at the end. I have little doubt the natural evolution of a Republic will always degrade into an Oligarchy with near absolute certainty (barring unnatural or premature causes like invasion and occupation, disasters, civil war, etc).

Perhaps the best way to put it is that rather than government evolving, government revolves. There is a cycle from Anarchy to Oligarchy and back to Anarchy (AKA revolution) that always repeats. Some take longer than others, many skip the Republic and Democracy steps completely, but the end result is always the same. Yeah, that means there really are no \"stable\" forms of government.

So really there is absolutely nothing we can do about it save for overthrowing the government, and I don't think that is even remotely possible in the current climate.

I agree. But overthrowing the present government would just create a new one with the same old human caused problems and faults. Maybe humans need to evolve, we're sure stuck in the same old patterns.

I'm reading a series of books by S.M. Sterling about what happens hypothetically when man is thrown into the dark age and electricity suddenly fails to work and chemical reactions change so that gunpowder, gasoline and even steam power are worthless. The first book is called 'Dies the Fire' and it's quite fascinating so far and it's even set in my neck of the woods of the Willamette Valley in Oregon. A good study on how man deals with a new reality, a new life, a new society, and it's definitely not pretty. The same old ways reemerge.
