Power Supply Question...

So, doing a little Case Modding - I pickedup a Neon Light bar from the Auto Section at WalMart. Requires a 12v connection.

Didn't realize it at the time (Mostly because the box was sealed and I couldn't tell) but the wire that comes with it has just two exposed ends. No plugs or anything.

Well - doing my research, I found that most Peripheral connections on your PSU provide 12Volts.



At any rate, the Peripheral has 4 wires: Red, Black, Black, Yellow.

Anyone know exactly what each wire does? (Power, Ground?)

Im going to take a broken Case Fan, cut the cable off, and try to splice that with the LED Bar. Then plug that up to an older systems PSU (For testing). Just wanted to get some insight as to what wires I should tie it onto.

black is ground, obviously; Yellow is 5v and red is 7v IIRC.

So.. I would need to tie all 4 of these wires into the two wires coming off the LED Bar ?

Any idea on how I should pair them up?

(Yellow/Black from PSU to Black LED, then Red Black from PSU to White LED) ?

Actually, I think i may have figured it out - see what you think:

Got a broken Fan, it is attached to one of those Pass-Thru power cables. Power in on one side, power out to another device on the other. With two wires already split out to the Fan.

Clipped the two cables leading to the fan, and will tie these two into the LED Bar. Yes?

As to how you hook them up, I'd have no idea, outside of pick a black wire for ground.

Ohh, okay.

So to power the 12v light, I will need to run the Yellow and Red together to the LED., and run both of the black cables together to the LED's other cable.

Yikes. Cables from the PSU:

black - GND
yellow - +12V
red - +5V

then.. DO NOT combine the yellow and reds. Cause that would make it... +17 V

Each color specifies a voltage or purpose.

Red: +5 volts
Black: ground
Black: ground
Yellow: +12 volts

The connector you pictured is a standard on all power supplies. If that connector is on your light bar then you can plug it into any power connector (making sure the colors line up and genders correspond) on your power supply cables.

At any rate, get one of those fan power adapters for connecting a 3 or 4 pin fan to a 4-pin molex, and then cut off the fan connector and solder your light bar to it, making sure the wires match up where you want.

Yikes! So much wrong info in this thread! Why don't more of you guys have a meter to read the voltage on the wires? If you're not sure what the voltage is, measure it!

Just thought id give you an update.

Took a broken Fan, and clipped the wires leading to it. Stripped the ends and spliced them with the LED Bar:



Two wires leading to the fan, one was already on the Yellow/12V, the other was ground.

Here is the finished result:
