Firefox slower than cold tar

Post by Red_5 »

So as of late Firefox 3.0.8 has gotten slower and slower and slower until now I can't even get in to my Facebook and other sites. IE 7 works just fine, but I prefer the Firefox setup/security.

Any tweaks, configs, blah blah blah that will help me out?

try Google Chrome. I never thought I'd ever recommend a browser other than FF, but lately it has just been getting so slooooow. Chrome is like greased lighting by comparison. Still new, so it still has a few bugs, but overall I love it.

Firefox is the best. :D

I find Firefox has issues with consecutive uptime (being open for days or hours on end); I have found its limit is at about 2 or 3 days.

Try CCleaner and closing the browser when you are done surfing/browsing. You might also try reinstalling Firefox (after backing up your bookmarks) to see if that helps.

I only ever have it open for at most 2 hours at a time. I'll try those links out when I'm on my computer.

I would uninstall and reinstall a clean copy, and defrag of course.

I love how no one here is saying, \"Well then stick with IE7!\" Nooo don't go back to IE!

Suit yourself. Did you contact Mozilla to see if they could help you?

They told me everything I've already heard in this thread... I'm liking Chrome though. It's pretty cool.

Have you tried Firefox in safe mode?

Code: Select all

firefox -safe-mode
at a terminal

No dice... strangely enough it's now only Facebook that's having problems... it loads so slow on my computer, but perfectly fine on my laptop... everything else is dandy

Try running ccleaner (or clear private data in firefox). Flush all the caches and everything, also uninstall any unused browser add-ons and toolbars.

Usual suspects for making it slow seem to be
  • Cache
  • Download history
  • Browsing history
(Although they only slow down certain parts of the app for me.)

incidently, CCleaner has added a nifty little \"advanced\" feature called \"Wipe Free Space\". It over writes all \"unused\" hard drive space. It made some kind of difference because when I re-defraged after running it, it took some time to complete.... longer than normal.

Still oozing along with images, fine without. Yeah I give up, I'll just use Chrome whenever I want to view a page with images or something. Or my iPod Touch. Thanks for the help
