POW

Post by woodchip »

Oral arguments are being heard before the USSC regarding prisoners being held at gitmo. I'm not sure why as I don't see much difference between gitmo prisoners or holding german pow's back in WW2. Having said that, I can see the problem of just when the war on terrorism ends and the prisoners can be repatreated.
To somehow give these prisoners the same rights as american citizens seems to me to be on par with giving illegal aliens the right to vote and have a drivers license.

pow status seems reasonable to me.

i guess someone ELSE doesn't think it's reasonable though. or they would be POWs already.

i'm glad this is being given attention by the media again though. i hear some australian cases (david hicks etc) are going to the supreme usa court to assertain whether these guys are POWs or what.

Having complete authority within the Executive Branch is dangerous. But I don't think any past precedents apply regarding their status or treatment. It's a different type of war. I think the Supreme Court needs to define a different type of POW, not bound by past conventions.
