Network

OK networking guru's, help me with this if you would. I have 2 comp. One is plugged directly to the internet modem wireless box, the other feeds off the wireless signal. How can I take xfer data between these 2 comps.? More to the point I use the wireless for emails and is where I get links to blueprint pdfs. sometimes for govt. jobs I get secure links I can only seem to be able to use on the wireless comp where I receive links via email. I can download files from there but the other comp. has the 26\" screen so I do takeoffs from there. So can I easily set up a xfer system? Both comps run on winxp pro.

In most flavors of XP file and printer sharing is disabled by default, but it can be enabled by running the home and small office network setup wizard. Run it on both computers with identical settings relevant to your network and it should be good to go. The only other potential hitch is if your wireless router partitions the wireless from the wired, which some routers have settings for. If so you need to disable the partition so the wired and wireless computer can talk to each other.

Basicly, make sure they're on the same workgroup, and make sure you have a folder shared, and if you are running a firewall like zonealarm, make sure your local area IP's are in your trusted zones or it'll shut you down before you even start.

Didn't have much luck. Am I supposed to give both comp. the same name?
I did set up a email acct on the target comp and can xfer the info I need by sending myself a email.

If you have any Antivirus Suite on either machine go into it and ALLOW your Local Network (especially Nortons)

In the Future of anyone who reads this Thread. Make sure your next printer purchase supports Ethernet(not wireless they fail too often in printers)

Ethernet is the best. But I've shared a USB printer connected to my XP box to my g/fs Vista Laptop without any issues.

USB Printer with Ethernet and Wireless support is a requirement nowadays. I would rather have it plugged into Ethernet and not have to worry about having the Connected PC/MAC turned on. add printer type in the IP address and be done with it, not to mention the network Printer Drivers (except Epson) are pretty lean
