Toshiba Tecra 8100 screen turns what looks like off but actually you can see a faint image if you get it from the right angle.
I can plug in a free standing monitor and it works fine but when I toggle back to the laptop it goes off.
I can also push the switch that the screen pushes down when it closes and it will bring the monitor up for a minute.
Should I be planning a funeral for the monitor?

does that laptop have a \"FN\" Function key and some keys that look like a Sun ?
your brightness on the keyboard may be set way down.

Usually the brightness level of a laptop doesn't include levels that turn off the backlight entirely. 99% likely the backlight is failing, the good news is depending on the model they can be replaced. Try looking it up.
