Daisy Chain routers

okay quickie question.

i just acquired a WRT54G V5 Wireless G Router that works. if i want to daisy chain it to my existing BEFSR41 so that i will have more wired ports for all my devices that use Ethernet i would plug the Internet Port of the Wireless to either Port 1 or Port 4 of the wired router? right? then assign the wireless router a host IP of 192.168.1.2? uugh i hate networking

Yea, yea, and then set it to bridge mode or something…get a switch…

2 Routers = big headache.

well first you have to decided who is hosting what

4 port or wireless

then if 4 port because the internet is there

then go into wireless routerchange ip, disable dhcp set it switch mode

then plug it into ANY port of the 4 port, Do not use the WAN port on the Wireless router

port 1 2 3 x on 4port
port 1 2 3 x on wireless

you lose a port on both

nvm this idea, the wireless is bad, looks like a bad flash and i cant recover it with TFTP Firmware Flasher

all it does is flash the power light rapidly and steady paced, Ethernet and WLAN light up but SES does not and it fails to assign a IP Address. i tried the reset for 30secs - 1min button but nothing. anyone have any ideas?

Its not a good idea to do a router behind a router even though I do it but its because the att 2wire router won't let me use a dhcp server and a dns server but I set my router to be in DMZ mode so that the 2wire makes mine totaly open to the net and let's my router hanndle the routs and port fowarding. But the reasion y u don't want to use a router to add more ports is the wan port on some is only 10mb so u cut your speed between the 2 cause its going 100->10->100 networks some do have a 100mb wan but they seem to act like 20mb ports. Just buy a switch 8 port switches r so cheep now.

i got it in this condition.... i havent even tried flashing it, it came to me in this state. i know how to flash a router with TFTP. and i know its not good to do router behind router. im going to turn one into a switch like bubba said to do. but scratch that idea unless i can revive this WRT54G. does tomato work on this model?

its a WRT54G V5.0

EDIT: However it appears that DD-WRT works with the version 5 of that router.

okay i checked out DD-WRT, it does support V5.0 but what im asking now is, if i cant get TFTP to even interface the Router, is it dead?

YES!! FREAKING YES!! i actually did it!

had to split open the router and do the 15-16 pin short then reset the router im sweating like foshiznit!! the whole time.

thats a absolute first for me. ive never worked on a PCB at this level before.

now let me make sure i did this right..... primary router (Wireless 54G) set to DHCP, secondary router (BEFSR41) set to switch ( Disable DHCP) correct?

now time to flash to DDWRT, and this is what im not understanding, what is the Killer for? do i run that first?

nvm ill just leave it at the latest LinkSys firmware

Yeah, you disable DHCP on the second router (some linksys routers have the option to behave as a gateway (router for the rest of us) or what they call \"router\" (bridge), set it to bridge mode and disable the DHCP. Then connect any LAN port on the internet connected router to any LAN port on the disabled router and the remaining LAN ports on both routers will work.

Although a superior option is to do what I do, which is connect a LAN port from my router to a 16 port 10/100 switch that someone gave me for free.

ok it looks like im going to need DD-WRT. i need to boost the signal power on the wireless, i have soo much EMF from all the stuff in my room and around the house that even just 3 rooms away i have a shitty signal. that or the wireless may be having issues.

im trying to follow the instructions but linksys firmware says its failing, and TFTP says its a invalid password (but i know its the right password)

well crap, now it fails to even acknowledge a open connection. last thing im going to try is running unsecured, but i hate piggy-backers. it says its connected to the router from my laptop out in the living room, but it refuses to open a connection for IE or FF.

any ideas?

can someone walk me through setting up DD-WRT, i cant seem to get it to work after reading the step-by-step from the official page. it doesnt tell me what killer and prep are, and im thinking that those are needed.....

FINALLY!!! i got DD-WRT, bitsum.com had a forum entry about how to setup DD-WRT in a FULL Description method, telling me what prep and killer were, and how to step by step flash the router and cycle it after each step

the only really valid choices for channels are 1, 6 and 12.

Instead of doing all this legwork, wouldn't it have been simpler and less of a headache to get a twelve or 24 port router?

just thought id update this......

DD-WRT is doing excellent.... matter fact ive had 4 incidents in the neighborhood of people trying to piggy-back my connection and hack my wireless now that im running 150mW Broadcast power, i must be covering a little more room than i thought i would be.
