MANTIS!

Post by Tunnelcat »

August, that time of year again for big Praying Mantis bugs to show up. This one on my arm is about 3 inches long. It's a brownish color, but I've seen bright green ones here as well. I like the way the head swivels around when it looks at things. Prickly sharp little feet too! Cool bug. 8)

Yeah, they like to hang out on my house's stucco walls this time of year. Must be a nice temperature for them.

A Preying Mantis will actually change color to match its surroundings. Set it in a jar with a bunch of green leafs and it will turn back green.

Oh, and they will bite, if you piss it off.

When I was 12, I found the green ones behind my speakers. It's the ugliest looking bug. They have a 4ft version at a museum here in Ottawa. Pretty narly looking.

See that barb on the front claw pointing backwards? If you get a section of your skin pinched between that and the barbed forearm, OUCH!

I like the stick bug pic AlphaDoG. I had those in my yard in Colorado Springs. They got to be over 4 inches long! Very weird looking and hard to spot.
