I don't know about the senators part, but I've had enough of his arrogance. This country is not meant to be under the control of one person or government and I have taken it upon myself to make sure everyone knows what is happening. And if I get Obama himself pissed off at me then I know I'm doing a good job.

His views are communist/socialist. He wants as much control as possible. This isn't the way our country is supposed to be run. It is a country meant to be governed by its people.
Using this power to control the internet he can silence people that speak out against him and control the content of the web.

I'm not really sure but I bet he's not going to argue against it if anything...Kaizerwolf wrote:From that entire article, Obama wasn't really mentioned. Only some senators were mentioned, as far as i saw. Maybe i missed something, but i dunno if Obama really has anything to do with this.

No. ISPs must follow laws. They add more every few years. This would be another. And color theory is a real science.TechPro wrote:You know, the truth is that Obama (or the U.S. Government, take your pick) can't shut down the Internet anyway. It does not rely on the U.S. in order for the Internet to exist (it used to years ago, but not anymore). It's global. Obama doesn't have that kind of authority (no one does).

I understand you view, but I disagree. These are elitist politicians that fear what they don't control. If the democrats are trying to make this country better they lack the understanding of how much stronger competing businesses are versus a new government branch. (This could also be true for health care but I believe that all premiums to one system would be best.) Also I wish there would be a massive net attack because Linux distros and macs would survive.Red_5 wrote:His views are communist/socialist. He wants as much control as possible. JFC, what's wrong with you people?
can't you see a garbage story when you see it?
there is no possible way that one person can control all the internet, no matter how powerful they are.
It can't happen and this story is just insulting. I feel dumber just from reading the first ten words of it.
I can't believe the junk I read on here now.

\"Nobody can control the internet.\"
Perhaps nobody can control the content- but how do you get your internet? It's called an ISP. Those can be shut down. Central servers? Routers? Shut down.
Run around with your wifi laptop hoping to get an open AP? They're all connected to ISPs which can be shut down.
About the only way someone could get internet is with a satellite connection- and that's assuming the government couldn't cut those off as well.
Yes, the internet can be shut down- at least in one country. Ask the Iranian people.

I agree, and it amazes me how many people think an authority figure could order the ISPs to shut down. At most a person could shut down *maybe* one country, but ONLY if all the many many ISPs all agree to do it (fat chance).Ferno wrote:can't you see a garbage story when you see it?

There's a big reason why they won't even attempt to shut down or even try to control the internet: People would actually get off their collective behinds and actually yank senators out of their seats if they did.
TB: Another Iran comparison?. I don't know if anyone's told you but people here are getting pretty sick and tired of you trying to demonize Iran every chance you get. Frankly it's just ridiculous to see it here all the time. Why should we believe you on anything now if all you've done is dump scare story after scare story?

If Obama dared to boldly hit the internet switch tomorrow, as the whole country watched in horror, then they might. Why would Obama want to shut down the internet (communication) against the wishes of the majority? That's really what you folks seem to be railing against. I believe that people like the people in power right now only require the precedent. The gullibility of the majority makes them easy pawns.Ferno wrote:There's a big reason why they won't even attempt to shut down or even try to control the internet: People would actually get off their collective behinds and actually yank senators out of their seats if they did.

Did you forget about the Twitter users who constantly got word out about what was/is going on in Iran? Shut down for Iran? Ha! Their government wishes!Isaac wrote:Correct.ThunderBunny wrote:Yes, the internet can be shut down- at least in one country. Ask the Iranian people.

Not that I think Obama is a good guy, But isn't it likely that the whole point of this misguided bill was NOT an attempt to cut off peoples access to information, but to shut down infected botnets participating in DOS attacks on critical assets?
I think its probably a VERY bad idea, very likely to be misused, but it doesn't look like the INTENT was evil.

What can really come out of this…
Reality:
Government creates a rapid response office to help ISPs coordinate in the event of a cyber attack. (or sum such)
Fantasy:
In a darkened room, way beneath the whitehouse, hundreds of federal workers tap away continuously on their laptops blocking evil content.
