If an unknown species goes extinct is the planet worse off for it?

Seems to me the dinosaurs didn't have much bearing on the planet. Why should these 163 supposed "new" species? There were many more species of dinos than that and the planet is still here.

Yes. We're breeding more human resistant animals. We'll soon have super wolves or gator bears.

That's actually interesting to think about.

Since we're wiping so many animals out, the only animals left will either be domesticated animals or 'pest' animals that can actually adapt to us.
I wonder if it's possible to indirectly create a sentient species millions of years from now because of our presence. (Assuming we last that long)

If we do last that long, we'll probably have created something sentient intentionally by then, however.

who talks about the planet? The planet will continue to exist no matter what we do to it (most likely). Not sure about you, but to me species have value in their own right, like a piece of art, and I would not like them to go extinct. They are the product of such much time (if you are an evolutionist) or god's will (if you are of the other persuasion), so I hate it when they would go to waste.

Also, given the extinction rates right now (no matter the reasons for, climate change, pollution, destruction of natural habitats), it is only a matter of time when somethinc critical for our food chain is hit, and then we'll pay the cost (if only the increased costs of finding an alternative).

Consider honey bees:

One could also argue extinction of species is a natural evolutionary aspect of life. If the dinosaurs were not eliminated, humans would not exist today.

True, of course. But there is something like a typical extinction rate, and then there is what we are having now. And this is 10 to 100 times higher than the \"natural\" extinction rate, almost like a hockey stick if you want to look at it this way

Side note: Everyone know that SG1 was the best show ever because of the Season 2 episode \"Window of Time\" where T'ealc and O'Niel get stuck in the time loop. You can NOT watch that episode without laughing.

I've been listening to since the mid 70's in one iteration or another.

The "lost in Space" movie and Star Trek "Voyage Home" were all save the planet flicks as was the new "day the Earth stood still". What a jip that was.
