Killing a killer doesn't create a 'just' situation at least not just in the sense of 'fair' and if you mean just in the sense of 'deserved' then it is simple revenge which doesn't serve us well so if there is no deterrent component to the penalty it isn't worth the risk of executing innocent people.

Justice is not just some legal buzzword for revenge, it is an aspect of reality.

And I contend that putting someone to death for taking it upon themselves to take another's life (outside of self-defense) does indeed create a just situation.

You don't believe in Hell and you've stiff-armed God. I don't expect you to understand His precepts or believe what He's said about rejoicing when your enemies meet their end.
