It's hard not to include Descent. I mean from the time D1 demo came out till 2001, I played almost nothing but Descent.

I forgot to add one to. Monster Truck Madness 2. It was made by the same people who made Hellbender. I remember the announcer saying \"Executioner, has 4 big wheels and he isn't using any of them!\" whenever I catch big air, or when I'd find the ocean in one of the tracks, go completely underwater, and hear the announcer in a low, dragged out voice, saying \"Eexxeeccuuttiioonneerr, iiss ssaaiilliinngg tthhee sseevveen seeeeeeaaaas.\" XD I'd do that often just to get a kick out of it. And I remember you hit F9 to call for a helo to pick you up whenever you flipped over. Sometimes it would send in one of those Teradactals from Hellbender from world #5 Chimera. ^^ Good times.

Oh man Carmageddon 2 on my SLI Voodoo2s was epic. That game was hilarious.

Descent3 has held up amazingly well for being so old. I don't even see the need for much better graphics, the graphics it has are very functional.

What ever happened to Interplay coming back from the dead and redeveloping the Descent IP?

I used to play Wacky Wheels a little bit. Haven't touched it in years though.

I still play the full version of Raptor from time to time. One of my recent D3 pilot names ("Cattle of Battle") is a tribute to one of the Raptor specials.

Other classic games I like:

DooMII

Minesweeper (yes, this is a classic)

LOL at Minesweeper, however the logic it takes to do even the smallest of games is amazing.

Sopwith

The real nail-biter was the area where you had to eat out of all the dogs' dishes! The big cheese area was probably my favorite. I once played long enough to get the full 9,999,999 points, but still don't know how high the levels go. I never completely filled the screen with dancing kittens.

Interactive Fiction. Infocom and the original Colossal Cave. Text only and GREAT. Games where the story was the main point, instead of thrown in as an after thought. You can download some of the old classics for free now:
Zork
Colossal Cave Adventure

And an active community is constantly making new adventures (also mostly free):
Interactive Fiction Archive
IFiction
Who needs graphics! Live a story!

The second generation of Interactive Fiction went beyond text and included primitive 2D graphics, but story was still the main point. The \"Monkey Island\" series is a good example of these. Sword Fights by insults, wow! Talk about creative! Good game.

Techpro already mentioned the Grandaddy of all Role Playing Games. Rouge, NetHack, and all of it's descendants. The graphics are text, although you can now play with a very simple tile based gui, or even download Falcon's Eye for an isometric version. Your hero is represented by @, a lower case \"a\" is probably a giant ant, and upper case \"A\" is a carnivorous ape, and trust me, you want to avoid the upper case \"D\" dragons as much as possible, unless you can tame one and make it into a pet. Yes, you can do that. Don't let the primitive graphics fool you, NetHack has to be the most complex RPG's ever created. Touch or look at a cockatrice and you will turn to stone, but you can wear a blindfold as a defense. IF you can kill the deadly beast, pick it up and wield it as a weapon! But you better put on some gloves first. And be careful not to fall into a pit while carrying the deadly creature or it might fall on you and turn YOU into stone. The developers think of EVERYTHING. Got an interesting potion, dip your weapon into it and see what happens. Don't eat dead leprachauns, you might get teleportitis! (unless you have a ring of teleport control, then it's kinda nice!) You can download any of these absolutely free:
NetHack or my favorite variation,
SLASHEM (It's nethack with more, uhm, nethack!)
Falcons Eye Nethack with Isometric Graphics.

have any of you ever played The Incredible Machine: Contraptions. Each screen gave you a limited set of items, such as lazers, pullys, supper balls, antigravity pads, cats and can openers. AND a \"simple\" task to perform, such as \"get the blue ball into the red basket\". It was a LOT of fun.

Oolite An old game (Elite) updated with new graphics. Fly around space in 3d, trading goods and zapping pirates! It's slow, but fun!

It would be really neat to see something like this combined with Descent. I would love to see Descent as a huge MMO game. instead of interacting with others in one small mine, imagine battling across an entire planet, zipping into a mine, blasting the bad guys, then zooming out, racing across a jungle, and diving into a mountain cave for another fight. Then, of course, warping between worlds and space stations, exploring asteroid fields, hiding behind moons. Sorta EVE online, but instead of sim mode, Descent 6dof mode. wow!

I'll echo a few already mentioned:
  • Descent (of course!)
  • Descent3 (is this considered a \"classic\" already?)
  • Raptor, Call of the Shadows (my brother and I love shooter-scrollers)
  • Wing Commander (I still have the original diskettes and all the manuals and spec sheets that came with it - maybe worth something?)
  • Tetris (though I always did better on the NES - level 23, baby!)
  • Freespace
  • Metal Gear (the original)
  • Minesweeper (never was as good as my college roommate)
  • Sopwith (on a monochrome monitor)
  • Scorched Earth (oddly enough, this was a GREAT group game!)
Here are a few more I remember enjoying:
  • Deep Space Drifter (my favorite 'interactive fiction' game of all time)
  • BattleChess (watch one's pawn take down a bishop)
  • Stunts (first game I remember where you could create your own track)
  • SimAnt (odd fun driving the guy out of the house)
  • TradeWars 2002 (dial-up BBS game, the first time I remember playing a game with someone I didn't know)
There are a couple more, but I can't even remember the names anymore. :P

Those were BOTH great games! Man that brings back memories. I remember fighting busy signals and dialing in every day so I could use up my turns playing TradeWars.
