Pry the 9mm out of my hands - CAN'T INSTALL WINDOWS 7!

So I'm trying to upgrade Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium...

First, it forced me to go through the pain of installing Service Pack 1. That took about three hours.

Now, it won't let me install 7 because it thinks McAfee (incompatible) crapware is installed on my computer. McAfee WAS on my computer when I first got it, but I uninstalled it over a year ago.

Initially I thought it had found the old folder in Program Files and took that to mean it was still installed. So after an hour of changing permissions and file ownership and freaking out, I finally managed to delete that folder.

Tried installing 7 again. It thinks McAfee is still there.

So I set Revo Uninstaller loose on my computer to destroy anything related to McAfee. It found plenty of old files and registry keys, so I removed those promptly and rebooted.

Tried installing 7 again. It thinks McCrappy is STILL THERE!

Tried Revo Uninstaller again, and this time it can't find anything.

I am about to commit a terrorist act against Microsoft HQ if I can't get this to work.

To sum it up, my Vista experience is hell.

My son had problems like that too. I bought him Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for his netbook. No DVDRom on those suckers I told him to put it all on a thumbdrive and install from there. So he started to have problems trying to upgrade. This is what I told him, use the thumbdrive as his boot drive and install a fresh install from there wiping the hardrive by deleting the partition and resetting it up with a fresh partition and format. Had no problems then. Just had to download one driver from the manufacturers web site. Fresh install is the best.

I wish I could do a fresh install... Too much stuff to back up and too little time.

I've got one last weapon to throw at it when I get home...

try booting off the install media, rather than upgrading from inside vista

Upgrading Windows is always an unpleasant experience. Fresh installs are the only way to go.

Got it... Finally. Blasted the system with some McAfee total cleanup tool and upgraded to Win7 in safe mode...

I'm liking it so far.
