So...hey guys. It's been a ridiculously long time since I've posted here regularly, and I'm not even sure why. I have some bizarre OCD-ish thing about wanting to read everything that's posted on the small-ish forums I visit, so for something like the DBB that does blanket per-visit new post updates, I just don't log on until I'm ready to sit and read everything. But when you get delayed, everything starts to pile up, and you feel less and less like tackling the pile...and you can see where things go from there. Stupid, I know. I've finally cut myself off by logging in without reading any of the backlog, so maybe I can manage to keep up again and look over a bit of the backlog just for kicks. (I'm not touching E&C, though. )
As for the game itself...jeez, how long has it been? A year or two now? I've really dropped the ball on it, probably for a number of reasons. I've never been incredibly big on multiplayer gaming to begin with, since I primarily play games to work my way through a story, and there comes a point where blasting enemy ships over and over again in the same old levels just doesn't hold the same attraction. I've been putting in a lot of time over at Hard Light Productions over the past few years; the whole FS2 mod scene is primarily focused on using the storytelling medium that the game provides to pull off some really amazing fan-made additions to its story, and I've often wished that Descent could have had something similar. That being said, I've been playing some Serious Sam over the past few weeks, and it's reminded me that just blowing the hell out of something over and over again can be incredibly fun in its own right. Maybe it's time to dust off my Sidewinder again...
Putting all that fluff aside, I guess the only big question I have at the moment is...just what have I managed to completely miss over the past year or two? I've been keeping an eye on the all-but-comatose PD, but there wasn't exactly a whole lot of news making its way over. I have done a bit of digging over the last month or so, enough to hear about Lothar and Drakona's new baby; major congrats, guys! What really shocked me, though, was scrolling down to the Dev Team folder...and seeing Kevin Bentley of all people posting in there. And, wonder of wonders, he's working on the 1.5 patch? The same patch that's been floating out there in the ether for the better part of a decade? And the Matt Toschlog stopped by too? And the phrase \"source code\" has been tossed around in a non-frivolous matter? Seriously, somebody pinch me. I had absolutely no idea that any of this was going on, and it makes me think that the Descent community might not have faded nearly as much as I'd thought. I figure that, if I've managed to overlook all of that, there had to have been one or two other juicy news items I've missed out on too, so if anything comes to mind, share the goods.
It really does feel good to be make a post here again, though. I have no idea what the hell I've been doing not showing up here every day.
