Last night on the News Hour there was a story about how if doctors/surgeons would only use a checklist before doing an operation, they could cut down accidents/mistakes by 2 thirds…

I’ve been using checklists in my business since the beginning, and assumed that something so essential would already be in use for something so important…but noooo.

Spidey, the problem is, surgery is not something you can create a checklist for. Seconds can cost lives. It's not like you're making a book and have to make sure the pages are in correct order and have all day to make this happen. Having someone's chest open you can't sit there and go through a list.

Huh ? If you can have a checklist for flying, you can surly have one for surgery; things like \"account for all compresses\", \"sterile scapels\", \"count needles\" etc. Just having the sections \"pre-op\" and \"post-op\" would save a lot of lives.

1) Cut off the right leg not the other one.
2) Check to see if #1 means the opposite of left or 'correct'.
3) Do #2 first then #1

While you're performing sugery, would you want your doctor to stop and have someone go through a checklist or would yuo prefer they know it already beforehand. Some suguries can't be stopped and have to be completed withinm a certain time frame.

Funny I notice when I had carpal tunnel surgery he put yes on the arm he was cutting on and no on the other before I went in for surgery seems like common sense to mark the body with things like cut here or something and to count the instruments when done.

Hey! my wife had that same surgery done last week! and yes, to minimize \"boo boos\" they triple and quadruple check where the operation is going to be done. Her doctor actually came into prep and wrote his name on her arm where yours says \"yes\".

Her stitches look nicer!
