Campus-canvassing network leeches

Post by Birdseye »

I've had two job interviews with companies recently that have a great presentation or pamphlet at a job fair, then pull the switcheroo in the interview.

These network leeches have the basic business premise to suck the value and life out of young college students: Intern with our company, and we'll gave you a paltry commission, which you earn by selling low quality products directly to your friends and family!

The most recent one was a "Financial Services" company. They had a big office in downtown San Jose, so it looked legit and all. I felt from talking to her at a career fair that the commission would be low, but I would be learning life long skills like planning an estate at the time of death, setting up trusts, mutual fund investments, homeowner's insurance, etc.

I thought it sounded like something I would use down the road, and something that would look great on a resume. But when you get there, the woman tells me after asking me a bunch of silly questions to determine how goal oriented I am, that the way I find *all* my clients is through networking. aka calling up people you haven't seen in 5 years to say "Hey, buy my product!" Barf. To top it off, she said everyone starts out strictly with insurance. So I should earn a paltry commission of selling insurance by ruining my friendships? Great! Where do I sign up?!?!?!?

There have been a few of these scammy-looking flyers floating around my school as well.

Along with some insane ramblings from LaRouche.

LaRouche is great for a chuckle. The flyer I saw went something like "Mr. Bush disagrees with my agenda and he sent countless snipers and armed guards to surround my house and kill me. Heroically, I... blah blah blah."

Hard to believe people take that guy seriously.
