BSOD and won't boot from CD
I can read the hd from USB to Serial cable but it won't start from the \"Already Installed on your Computer OS\" disk after changing boot order.

Tried 1 stick of RAM at a time.
Is it normal not to recognize CD install disk?
Dell 8400 XP

You're not having much luck lately with computers, are you thewolfe? Is it the same computer as this?
Well just got another piece of the puzzle from my friend he choose not to share it with me earlier.
Was also getting the following message.
\"Windows XP Home, Must restart because DCOM server process launcher service terminated\"
Some one gave him Start/Run, and type in \"shutdown -a\" This should disable the timer.
He said that worked for a few days.
Does that help any?
Also, can I delete sys restore points on drive not using the os? I can see the drive folders through USB to Serial cable.

if that dell is in it's default configuration it has 2 hard drives in a Raid config, get the raid boot floppy (hit F6 when prompted) and the xp restore disk \"XP Home OEM\" do an install let it discover previous Operating System if it is the same version O/S the it will give the repair install option ( not the same as repair console ) then scan for the rootkits afterward when you get back to the desktop
I seem to have a better workout dodging your stupidity than attempting to grasp the weight of your intelligence.

Do you have the Original Dell Operating Install Disk
(almost all OEM Windows XP ISO's that available Online are DELL Disks XP 11 in 1 DVD is a good example) XP Home XP Pro These do not come with keys. the key is on the bottom of the dell and is not required with DELL disks
These are CD's not DVD's since the system might not have a DVD drive or it's the DVD drive is the Slave on the secondary IDE Channel
Boot From the CD to install the Operating System, When Windows install routine checks to see if there is a Previous O/S installed If the Disk(install Disk) is the same version that is already Installed It will give you a 3rd Option to do a Repair Install, If it gives you only a Format option then it's not the same O/S.
This Repair Option(not to be confused with Repair Console) will install the core Operating System Files, leaving all data Files intact. It will take the same amount of time as a Fresh Install with the same Screens (except it does NOT prompt you to format the Drive)
After the First Reboot, remove the Malware/Virus that has Hijacked the Operating system as a Driver - But in case please download a Virut Removal Tool
Use Combofix and Malwarebytes
Once AGAIN - Windows Install Disk
Repair option after O/S scan (Correct O/S Disk) GOOD!!!
Format option after O/S scan (Wrong O/S disk) BAD!!!
Also If the Machine had XP spk3 and you only have a SKP1 or SPK2 disk it will still install. Make sure you update it to SPK3 right after you remove whatever nasty is on the machine
I do this almost everyday.... because people like to download malware and ignore it till it's too late.. and they pay for it

Sometimes I wonder what universe BUBBA lives in.
First he's talking about nonexistent RAID, and then booting from the CD which is exactly what this computer REFUSES to do. Try reading the first post BUBBA, it usually tells you what the thread is about.
thewolfe, if you found a virus on there try this. Reboot into safe mode and run your scanner. If it finds a virus reboot back into safe mode and scan again. Keep scanning until it doesn't find it anymore. Try stuff like malwarebytes and combofix. Easiest way is to reinstall the OS at this point. Is the \"Already installed on your OS\" disk just software? Or does it say it is the OS install disk? Other reasons it doesn't boot off CD is the CD drive is just not working properly, maybe try a different drive.

Actually since \"thewolfe\" usually leaves out 3/4 of the facts of what was done, and you have to pull teeth to get the rest
-Default Dell 8400 used raid
-Can not read Install CD (either using a DVD(AIO) in a CDROM or using the slave optical drive instead of the master optical -slave optical not a bootable drive-8400dell)
-Forgot to reconnect PSU to CD Drive
Pretty simple actually.. if you guys actually worked on PC's (thanks for the charcoal)
But we will not know until \"slowpoke\" responds with some more partial information
Really....If the CD truly did not work one would instantly connect a spare optical drive to the IDE cable and put it on top of the case, and move ON....

Guys, Bubba is smack on the mark about this ... unless that Dell has had the raid removed previously (which we have not been told one way or the other).
Krom's advice is also right if there is a virus causing the problem.
My \"gut feeling\" about this is that regardless if the problem is due to a virus, malware, corrupted files, failing HD, bad RAM, or failing mobo ... thewolfe is going to be rebuilding that system.
So ... If that is what will happen, and since rebuilding the system (assuming a complete wipe first) ... It would be wise for thewolfe to at the very least check the:
- cooling ability (fans, heatsinks, etc.)
- HD/RAID integrity
- CD/DVD reliability,
- RAM condition
Before he rebuilds that system or he'll just end up doing it again pretty soon.

Thanks TechPro... I do this on a daily basis.... with customers that only give you enough information to get you to their door.TechPro wrote:Guys, Bubba is smack on the mark about this ...
I check everything...with the concept that an F-14 pilot tried to fix it with a hammer. I'm usually finished troubleshooting and in the process of fixing it in less than 2 minutes.
Not my fault I give more than one thing to check at once.

Ran Housecall again and found the following.

That's all I've done for about the last four days at this point.
Will try to respond to some of the comments when I get time.

After cleaning up the viruses, not sure why it didn't find them on an earlier scans, I was able to \"Repair\" the OS.
The only thing that's not working is one of the DVD ROMs and I haven't had time to try another one.
Also I'm not sure how often he used Windows updates.
He had McAfee and Norton but to no avail.
And I confirmed where he probably got his viruses from when I went into his \"Temp\" files.
Thanks for all the help and I'll try to be as specific and clear when posting in the future.

It's gone but I never changed the setup on the drives so I'm assuming the one drive is \"broke\". And I thought they were both \"mastered\".
Thanks again for the assistance.
My next computer is going to be from a friend that the virus is sending out e-mails from his Yahoo account.
But this current one is \"Solved\".

C/S (Cable Select) is set on both drives then cable position matters . Selecting master on one and slave on the second is an overide, but performance will suffer if the master is on a cable longer than 18\" if it is at the end of the cable( hard drives ). this is also why 80 pin cables were not available in 23\"
