Some of the increased internet whining is, IMO, stoked by the media hyping up the \"great recession\" (such a stupid moniker), \"terrorism\", \"catastrophic climate change\", and so on. These huge, seemingly intractable problems create a lot of stress for people and, for the most part, we can't individually do anything about them.

Our political leaders haven't exactly helped those fears. Democrats think Bush's approach to terrorism made things worse, and are hella pissed Obama continued it. Republicans think Obama's deficit spending and stimulus plan is making a moderate recession into a huge one, and Bush's deficit spending and stimulus plan didn't help either. The approach to climate change seems to be to either ignore it, or fly thousands of people in thousands of private jets to a place with thousands of limos so they can get together and talk about ways to tax the hell out of jet fuel and gasoline. And that's how we handle serious problems? REALLY?

A second major contributor to the whining is the fact that we're dealing with the internet, and particularly media websites with no comment moderation, where the worst of human nature can be displayed to a large audience without repercussion. Everyone who's remotely disappointed feels like they can rant about how lame your grandma's cookie recipe is and what a [censored] your grandma is for making such a [censored] cookie recipe. Go to a website with comment moderation, ratings, and some connection to your real identity, and people are much more civil.

And with all the whining on the internet about how much your grandma sucks and how bad the recession is, normal people still go about their normal, everyday lives. They love their wife and kids. They still go to work in the morning, come home at night, have some dinner, watch some TV, and go to bed. They enjoy playing games on their computer, watching football, hanging out with their friends, going to church or the mall or whatever other social activity. Like always, there are some looking for work who don't have it, and some who have to cut back, and some doing just fine, and pretty much everyone is finding a way to make do. For all the d-bag-ness we see on the internet, in my experience, normal people aren't any whinier than they were five, ten, or twenty years ago. The whiners just have an easier time getting it out to a large audience on unmoderated websites.
