I probably disagree with these folks on all kinds of points, but they are officially my heroes now anyway.

There have been several effective counter-protests to Fred Phelps's group. The Patriot Guard Riders, for example, will show up at military funerals (if asked) and simply block the view of Fred Phelps' goons with American flags, and also sometimes drown out their chants with bagpipes.

This is a particularly clever variant. Just drown out Phelps' signs with absurd signs of your own... overcome hate with humor! I like it.
