U.N. Elects Iran to Commission on Women's Rights
By Joseph Abrams

Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged \"immodest.\"

Again this makes sense to me. Have that guy sit in and maybe he will learn something that he can take back to his own? If I elected him there, and I would have, that would have been my motivation.Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged \"immodest.\"

From what I remember, UN committee appointments are based on an alphabetical list. Whatever committee Uganda is heading this year, Ukraine will head next year, or something like that. (I might be wrong on the details -- it might not be alphabetical -- but the general sentiment is correct.)
This leads to things like Iran heading the Womens Rights commission, or back in 2003 or so, Iran and Iraq both being on the Human Rights commission.
