I knew this was going to happen...

Digimedia.com doesn't want to sell me descent.com. Those jerks.
It's probably because I entered \"student\" under \"occupation\" in their \"contact us\" form. I wish I had a few million to blow on a domain.
They replied with a \"you don't smell like money\" response:
\"Hi Isaac.

Our company is not interested in parting with this domain. \"
Yes, because you're doing SO much with it already. It'd be a shame to sell 'low' when it's in such high demand...

There is only one thing that really matters about that domain, Isaac... it is a single, English word (brevity is king). No one in their right mind would let that go for nothing (I think parking on domains with no intent to offer content should be outlawed anyway, though). The last time I tried to get a domain like that I got an e-mail response quoting me an outrageously high price (a few hundred, and for a domain I had previously owned). I counter-offered with around $30, and told them that they could accept that or lose more money sitting on it. The funny part is they never responded, but never renewed their registration. Now I own it.

Heh. I don't hate capitalism. You've gotta be some kind of selfish, idealistic fool to hate capitalism.

Who hasn't tried to find something in the internet and instead been directed to some useless link index parked on an unused domain. I really hate that. If it was simply a matter of buying and selling old domains then I could see that... a person is in possession of something valuable and they either sell it or sell it to a reseller... but I would make it illegal to pickup dropped or otherwise unregistered domains simply for the purpose of selling them. That's what happened to DevSF.com when I let it expire by mistake. I see a difference there. I think those useless bastards are a blight on the internet and they ought to go get a real job.

x2

And I'll add that complaining about how a company does business isn't hating capitalism. It's the biggest part of capitalism.

As an FYI, if I'm not mistaken, descent.com was a pornography site for several years pre-97. I remember a big joke on Kali in '95-'97 was to get noobies to goto the site for Descent cheats/hacks.

Interesting, I lost one of my domains to a squatter because I forgot to renew it. They keep sending me emails asking me if I want to buy it. I should try what you did.
Why doesn't it work?

They were sitting on a domain name that wasn't worth anything to anyone but me and I was pretty confident of that. I figure they probably thought that since it was short...

Go for it! All I can say is be honest and polite, but at the same time absolutely destroy them. ;P

I dug up the e-mail I sent, and I guess I had the counter offer higher than what I actually wrote:
e-mail wrote:I don't want to be ungracious, but I had to laugh when I received your e-mail. I was the original owner of devsf.com before it expired several years back when I was off-line for a time. I would like to propose a counter-offer, though, since I do have a sentimental stake in it: $19.95. ...Or... you folks can sit on it for several more years. .net is currently serving my purposes.

Sincerely,
...
Good luck!
