Quote size

Post by Birdseye »

Everytime someone uses the quote feature, I get serious eyestrain on both mozilla and IE. I'm running 1280X1024 on a 21 inch monitor. The quote text is extremely tiny, and to read it properly I have to get very close to the screen. Anyone else have this problem, or a solution?

In mozilla, you can set the minimum font size. Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts, and it's on the lower right. It'll force anything smaller to appear at that size. Pick something that works well with your monitor / resolution.

Same here, Birds. I hate the dinky quote size and generally avoid using quotes because I know it discourages reading them. I couldn't find any preference in Firefox to override it.

This *Aha! Moment* brought to you by KompresZor. :D Thx. Too bad, however, that it makes all small type big. :( There's alot I'd prefer remained small. It's just those damn quotes that I wish were a bit more readable for these old eyes.

Rather than everyone having to change their browser preferences, shouldn't we just increase it in the board?

Yeah, even I found myself squinting at it, I suppose it wouldnt be a problem if I still ran 1024x768 on my 19". Lately I have just taken for granted, its a bad idea to try to read quotes on the DBB late at night. For me the size of the font I can handle, but not with that color also, needs more contrast for me to be able to read something so small. Otherwise its just a blur.

can you use the [size] tags within a quote. or are you refering to reading quotes?

Increasing it board-wide would also make it freakin' huge for those of us who still run at low resolution... though I agree, right now it is a tad bit smaller than the smallest fonts on other boards I read.

Regular size would make sense. The quote box is useful enough just for making a distinction that it's a quote., I don't see the point in the tiny font size.

Well, if you have people quoting really long posts the smaller font can come in handy. I run at 1280x1024 and don't have a problem.

Make it a preferences option like "Regular font size =12; Quoted text font size=10" or whatever and then people cna just make it bigger when they want.

Too much work?

This is the normal quote size....
this is size 9
this is size 10
this is size 11
this is size 12

This is the normal quote in white
size 9 in white
size 10 in white
size 11 in white
size 12 in white

This is the normal quote in yellow
size 9 in yellow
size 10 in yellow
size 11 in yellow
size 12 in yellow
Now on my screen (16.5" viewable area @ 1024x768) the quote is size 11 and I don't have any trouble reading it, but I have 20/20 vision. But I think it would be eaiser to read in yellow or white. Maybe you could make the Quote white and Code yellow, just a thought.
Size 11

Yeah, even I found myself squinting at it, I suppose it wouldnt be a problem if I still ran 1024x768 on my 19". After looking at this, I find the size 12 much easier to read....

Even if the quotes were left the same color, 12 pt would be a heckuva lot easier to read than the current setting. I don't have too much trouble at present myself, but I can understand how many people can. Regarding long quotes: if a quote is long enough to have to scroll down a while at this size, making it bigger shouldn't make too much of a difference; you'll still have to scroll down :).

Size 12, testing lower contrast colors -- yellow and white are too bright in comparison to the rest of the DBB color scheme. Looking for a good green, or possibly a lighter yellow or gray...

Topher probably hasn't read this thread yet. I'll see if I can find the CSS file locally and make the necessary modifications and e-mail it to him.

12 white is fine for me. The box already indicates a quote, so the yellow isnt necessary and is hard for me to read. I don't have anyhthing near 20/20 :)

I just realized something... anyone who's LANned with Birds knows he sits with his face like half an inch from the monitor. I can only imagine what he thinks "very close" means, when half an inch is normal distance...

(but yeah, the font size change was good.)
