New Win7 installation old network workgroup

Post by thewolfe »

I'm installing Windows7 on an XP laptop. All my computers are now running on the network through the Mshome workgroup.

Will Win7 install with workgroup Mshome? It seems I remember \"7' installing another workgroup.

What's my best approach to my new installation? Or will Win7 just see Mshome?

You can change the workgroup at any time in system properties ---> remote settings ---> computer name tab ---> change button.

Windows should see any workgroup but it is best to set the workgroup all to the same one. Why would you want to stick with mshome as the name? Some versions of windows will have mshome and some will have it set to workgroup. Just change it to whatever you want. :?
Why doesn't it work?

Like Xamindar said, Windows 7 makes it pretty easy to see all the computers on the network, regardless of what workgroup they are on (though you may have shared file issue).

The file sharing is my may concern. Actually besides file sharing I don't have a lot of reason to see another computer.

Maybe I should rephrase what I said...

If you are on DIFFERENT workgroups you may have problems with shared files (XP probably won't see Win7, but Win7 will see XP).

However, if you have them on the SAME workgroup, you shouldn't have any problems.

Gotcha. I have three machines and then a laptop I'm installing Win7 on. I just wanted to make sure they could all \"see\" each other.

Thanks for the info.
