I wrote this tonight.
Race
With the shriek of labor the race of life begins
Time gives me a head start
My overconfidence blinds me
I am invincible
An ash falls from my cigarette
A drop of sand in the hourglass
A breeze plays across her blonde hair
Playing impishly into her face
Her full red lips and bright blue eyes
A moment framed forever
I am immortal
Time can never catch me
An ash falls from my cigarette
A drop of sand in the hourglass
My children play in the yard
Their youthful innocence
Etched into every curve and soft crevice
Every dimple and shine of their dazzling eyes
I look behind me
Time cannot keep pace
An ash falls from my cigarette
A drop of sand in the hourglass
The mountaintop is barren
The mind not quite as keen
The tongue not quite as sharp
The eyes not quite as bright
The bastard beginning to close the gap
But I wonâ??t let him overtake me
The cigarette has burned away
The final grain has fallen
My invulnerability has shattered
My mortality made evident
But I smile because I finally understand
As the lid begins to close at last
In the race of life, time will always catch up
But I gave him a hell of a chase
