I love the way he sites the word of god as the only source for the rules we should live by, claiming man is too arrogant and self serving to decide what is moral yet he bases his belief system on the word of a man who was passed that word by another man from yet another... who claims to have been instructed by god.
I see this kind of faith as convenience, expediency, a sort of plausible deniability in taking no responsibility for the selective logic you apply to arrive at your position. 'Some other guy told me god said you are just some guy so you can't be trusted to know what is right or wrong.'
Any time an unimpeachable and unreachable authority can deliver his commands through a series of un-verifiable self-proclaimed spokesmen there is going to be a problem. And anytime someone chooses to use that questionable message service to claim moral superiority over another I'm going to call bull★■◆● on their beliefs.
I take the writings and words of the prophets and spokesmen and compare it to what I know to be true and what I perceive to be correct and I don't adopt anything as 'gospel' just because some guy told me so. If there is a god I would hope he would find fault in me if I did!

Religion really is giving plenty of examples this past year or so for why me and my fellow Atheists need continue to be vocal, and loudly so about the archaic mind-forged manacle of religion. :-/Xmasisevil wrote:Disclaimer: Xmsisevil is an independent body with no affiliation to any particular group or organisation.

Curious how you atheists want to free mankind from the manacles of religion by proselytizing your form of null think. Yet where religion was banned, such as the old godless USSR, religion held strong. Not because there were chains binding them to religion, rather there was a soul deep yearning for it. The danger of a atheistic mind set is the govt. steps in and becomes the new god.Mjolnir wrote:http://www.godhatesfags.com/

While I am more agnostic, I think religions have a powerful influence for good and help many people get thru trying times. While we can always find isolated instances of outrageous behavior in any religion, they are rare. Due to their vocal statements they, unfortunately, get a lot of press coverage.
Re:
That is a profound misunderstanding of Russia, it's culture and it's Government if you think the USSR was truly a "godless" nation. They had programs of eliminating it but a big reason for that is because Russia has always had the Orthodox Church ingrained in their Government and the Czars being considered divine even up into the WW1 days. Communist extremism towards religion was based more on replacing the religious place in Government, and this follows their so called "atheist" teaching, basically Stalin was to be considered divine as well as the state. So in essence it was replacing one religion with another.woodchip wrote:Curious how you atheists want to free mankind from the manacles of religion by proselytizing your form of null think. Now saying that, that is obviously a country where the State did in fact become the religion but there are modern examples of Democratic states that have shed much if not all of religion to where Atheism/agnosticism is the majority like (I believe it is) Denmark. Considering they're one of the healthiest, happy in the world and the Government is not there religion... that refutes that argument .
I wouldn't disagree that religion can be a force for good, but I would perhaps argue with the reasons for that and explicitly state the actual fundamentals of the major religions atm are pretty shitty, especially Islam.
