Whats up with my sound???

I recently tried to watch a divx avi file, it played the video, but no sound. So i downloaded the ac3 codec from this page http://www.divxmovies.com/faq/#4.4 and it works but in the middle of the video, the sound almost completely went away. Now even when i play mp3s it sounds scratchy and i cant hear the person singing, but i can hear like the background music only. I have tried uninstalling the codec, but nothing seems to work. Any help? thanks.

I have that issue as well, I have to crank the sound on AC3 movies.

Sometimes the sound is up and down.
