Unique backup / storage needs... any ideas?

Post by Thenior »

Hey everyone,

I've started doing some work on HD 1080p videos that are around 0:43-1:30 hours long. So they get big!

My need the data to be portable, as well as backed up. I am really hoping for at least 2TB of storage. Basically, my work computer is pretty fast, and my home laptop is pretty slow, at least for video editing. So I'd like to do my editing @ work, and bring home a copy of my work. Though I can't do much video editing @ home, I can do web design and coding, so when I bring it back to work, I'd like it to be synchronized.

The other problem is that I have very fast internet at work (26x10) and very slow internet at home (1.5x1.5), so I can't sync over the internet.

I found a that the Thecus N100Pro can have additional drives plugged into it via USB 2.0. I could grab a 2TB Lacie rugged external drive, plug it into the Thecus, and get a portable backup.

Only a couple concerns with that.
1) I don't need or want to pay for Network functionality or 4x HDD bays. I technically only need one HDD bay, and a means to backup to an external drive.
2)1080p videos get huge - backing them up over a network or USB 2.0 would be a bit slow. I am thinking eSata or USB 3.0
3) If I take the Lacie home with me, update the files, then bring it back to work... I don't think the Thecus would sync up properly.
4) I am trying to spend <$600

Anyone have ideas?

Why not just use individual external hard drives?

haha... I just thought of that too. I was over complicating it. I could just have a Internal 2TB drive, and an external 2TB drive, and sync them.

Do you know of any decent sync tools, besides SyncToy?

I purchased a couple of copies of \"GoodSync\" a while back (there is a trial). It seems pretty solid. I use it to sync website projects between my main machine and my laptop. It was worth every penny.

I'll have to check that out.. I think we have a license of it @ work, we use it to sync our FTP.
