I don't get face book. I can't see how it's better than email, phones, or web forums. Even my websites offer more flexibility. Maybe this is a sign that I'm old....

I have facebook but everything on my profile is (very obviously) falsified. I may have mentioned it somewhere before.

Facebook is kind of a combination of a personal website/blog, RSS aggregator, IM client, and webmail system. The first two are probably the biggest selling points of the system. The posts are shorter than a full-size blog, but for people who are just using it to talk to friends and family, that's probably what they want anyway.

I don't get face book

Simple: it's a place where you can keep in touch with great aunt Matilda, cousin Frank, and your baby sister all at once. You can't do it via e-mail without lots of CC's and reply-all mistakes. You can't do it via web forums because great aunt Matilda's friends wouldn't register, or if they did, all of cousin Frank's friends would get bored by their posts. And you can't do it via phone unless you want to spend hours every day talking.

Since I joined facebook, I have a much better handle on what's going on with my extended family and various old friends. It's no substitute either for the serious discussion of a good web forum, or for a phone call with mom, but it does supplement those rather well.

Falsification was the best defense I could think of against hackers/info selling etc...
I make it so obviously false so that anyone who so much as looks at it will realize it's false and hopefully not even waste time trying (because I couldn't bear to actually decieve them ). The only thing that comes close to personal information is that I live in Canada... the university I attend isn't even listed there (too small I guess) so that makes it simpler.
Anyone who I want to be friends with on Facebook knows all about me, and even if they don't know who I am if I send them a friend request they'll usually "get it".
I do the same thing with any "personal" information on my computer (I don't have any personal photos either). Yeah I'm a bit paranoid.

On MySpace it was even simpler since everything I put into Facebook is part of my "musician self" anyway.

I hate this keyboard it makes everything take longer, because the mouse-thingy on my laptop is right below it and uber-sensitive.

Sure, there are "safeguards" in facebook- but they are almost never used and many
are overlooked by facebook taking your data and selling it to anyone that wants to
pay for it.

I'll keep my data "in the family" thank you.
