Installing D2 in 64bit Windows 7

Post by Sniper »

Trying to get the game content off the disc, but apparently it's not freely available on the disc (you have to install it). The installer wont run on 64bit. Any suggestions?

7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org) can usually open and extract the .sow archives on the D1 and D2 CDs. It can sometimes have trouble with the spanned descent#.sow archives like from the Descent 1 floppies, but in that case the official ARJ archive utilities (found here: http://www.arjsoftware.com/) should be able to handle them.

That, or you could install an older version of windows into a virtual machine, and transfer it to your live install. Shared folders are wonderful that way. :)

If you do:

I've got an old Win 98 computer that still functions, so I installed D2 way back when just to get the files needed for Rebirth. I made damn sure that I had multiple copies of those files, so I could never, ever possibly loose them.

I actually recently lost my D1 & D2 files, so had to go back to the old discs.

The D1 files came right off the disc. The D2 files were all archived in DESCENT2.SOW on the disc, but WinRAR was able to open it up so I could get them.

Yeah, Foil's right.

All D1 data you can get directly from the disc, without any installer. For the D2 content you just have to look at descent2.sow and use any archiving program that can still manage ARJ archives. I think the D2 movies are not compressed there but also just sitting on the disc... god I haven't used my Descent CDs in years - after extracting all the content to use with D1X/D2X I burned them to another backup disc. :)

Extracting the Descent2.sow worked! DXX works like a champ on Windows 7 64bit. Thanks Zico!
