Check the volume controls, and make sure the default record device is set properly.
Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
If you're running Windows ... make sure your audio input is set to receive the microphone input, instead of CD Audio or Wave Input. (check that Windows is set to the Mic as the source)
Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
Running Win7. Not sure where to look. When I double-click on the volume icon in my system tray I get the "Volume mixer" which has speaker volume and Applications (system sounds). That's it.
If I click on system sounds I get a window that does have "Recording" which shows two microphones. One which looks like it has a phone icon with it and the other just has a check beside it. They're both enabled.
Also, I reloaded Win7 could I be missing drivers. If so, I've got "Communications", Input devices not sure what to even try at this point.

Right-click on the speaker icon in your system tray, and click Recording Devices. Set your mic as the default device. Check to see if mic boost is on, and adjust the level as necessary. Problem solved.

Right-click on Speaker icon, get a window, Volume Mixer. Under "Device" only Speakers Under "Applications" I get a "Sound" window that has tabs Playback, Recording, Sounds & Communications.
Recording has two mics. One with a telephone handset icon and one with a check mark icon.
The Properties on the check marked mic shows under jack info "digital jack".

Right click either of the Icons, Uncheck "Show Disconnected Devices." Also uncheck "Show Disabled Devices." Let us know if there is anything left to display after that.thewolfe wrote:Right-click on Speaker icon, get a window, Volume Mixer. Otherwise, try right click the other non check-marked devices and making it default.
Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
Both of the mics have been "unchecked" and both still show in the recording window.
BTW what's a good progie to shrink the pic so I can post something smaller.

Sounds to me like you need to change the mic from digital to analog. (the one that is not the phone/modem)
EDIT
Oh yea sorry…I see you want to get the built in mic working…
I got confused reading one of your posts.

Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
The green checkmark means that it's the current default device. The recording tab will show ALL of the available recording sources, not just the ones in use. Select the mic you want to use, click "set default" and it's now the default recording device. One of those is your built-in mic array, and the other is the mic jack input itself. You'll have to test to see which is which, by setting one the default, and making some kind of noise for it to pick up. (ie: snapping your fingers)

Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
I recorded using the "SoundRecorder" through internal mic making the top mic default. However, I had to be on top of the mic input and have the speaker volume cranked up to almost 100% to hear. So I assume that using that mic with my webcam would sound about the same (almost no sound).
Thanks for the input so far.

Kind of a long shot, but try using Audacity. I've had problems with Sound Recorder.

Go to the properties of the mic, and check the "Mic Boost" box. You'll get a decent level that way.
Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
I could hear it with speaker all the way up and sound boast all the way.
I'll try to contact someone on it and see if they can hear me.

Under mic prop I have "levels" and Mic Boost is there already so I just moved it to high.

Is there a check-box on the "Custom" tab? Humor me, and go look.
Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
Where would the custom tab be?

It's in the properties for the microphone, that you access by right-clicking on the volume control icon and clicking "Recording Devices".

I'm running Win7 on two machines. Laptop that I'm working on and a tower. Custom not on either one.

Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
Okay. That's usually the fix for me when it comes to mics, but if the setting isn't there, you might need to start looking at the hardware (e.g. is there something in/on the mic muffling it?).

Re: How built-in mic works on Dell Inspiron 1525
It may be driver dependent. Step-by-step directions that work for most systems. (Problem Steps Recorder ftw) If you have an IDT controller: click here.

MD-2389, great tutorials but....I don't have "Custom" and I don't have IDT controller.
Downloaded drivers from Dell and it's working. It's now showing it as "Microphone Array".
Thanks for all the effort ya'll put in.
