You'll remember my rants about the stupidity of the USA's National Ballistic Missile Defence System: it'll never work, and it'll costs many billions. A system without a purpose or a reason.
Anyway, seems like someone *else* in the US Military had a better idea - and it works!

Yeah - that's right - build a dirty great big laser and cut inbound missiles into scrap metal on the fly, so to speak.
Of course, typically, the Military misses the target by a mile - no pun intended. As it's only created a laser for one purpose: to shoot down missiles. Such a shame, because the Gigawatt class lasers I propose in my NBMDS would have multiple uses other than defence: Launching satelites, deorbiting space junk, ground-based anti-satelite system, air-defence network, interstellar messaging system, light-sail propulsion system, comet/asteroid collision-avoider, Search & Rescue illuminator, lighting the Luna surface for explorers, surgical ground-strike weapon par excellence, Instant targetting of hostiles anywhere on the globe, bug-eyed alien tamer, and probably a whole host of other uses too.
Well, it's a start anyway.
Laser Defence: about time!
Well Mobman, if you remember a while back I posted something similar but the laser in that instance successfully shot down an artillary shell. Also as an aside I was reading where NASA is actively pursuing a space elevator project. Now wouldn't that be the chizz!
"Now you can use those wonderful capitalistic practices and drop your prices to zero. Whoever puts up the first elevator could eventually own space for the next 100 years."
