MS Office under wine is more stable than Open office, by far. Not yet sure about Libre Office.

Just be sure to install it under its own prefix and commit to that prefix or your distro might not know where to find it under the new one... (causes a file type problem)

I'm running Office 2007 - legit, from a cd, and registered with Billy.

The initial reason that I got onto Linux is because I didn't want to pay Billy anymore.

I'll admit that I'd stay on Linux now regardless of Billy. At the same time, I'm going to stay away from office for as long as I can. Office is the closest thing that MS has to vendor lock-in, and I'd like to fight it.

I totally understand the purist mentality. That's what's kept the Linux community alive through, what I consider, the dark ages of Linux. Today, Ubunt-noobs like me, who feel they have a choice, just want the best OS. Many say ubuntu's not there yet. Personally, I feel like Ubuntu 10.10 is better than Windows 7, especially with Office 2007, which is something good MS made.
